Anyone tried an A5 magnet in either an A2 Pro or EVH 78?

Hi all
I own a musicman axis sport with an Alnico 2 Pro in the neck and EVH 78 in the bridge. The output levels of the two pickups are perfect for me, but i am getting a bit sick of the tone (the EVH in particular has too much mids for my taste). I was going to buy a new set of pickups, but i am now considering the idea of just changing the magnets to A5. I tend to be a big fan of low to medium output A5 pickups anyway (eg the 59), so this may work for me.

I was just wondering if anyone had tried either of these pickups with an A5 magnet? If so, how do they sound? Can I expect an A2Pro with an A5 to sound similar to a 59?

Thanks in advance
Zak

I swapped out the A2 in my neck pickup with a A5. The pickup started out as a APHII and after the swap i now call it a APH5. I love the way it sounds now. Its got better clarity and more highs. I've also swaped the A2 in the CC to a A5 making it a Custom 5. For me the A5 makes them sound more open.

I'm pretty sure the APH and Jazz are the same pickup with a different magnet, so what you've just gotten was a Jazz neck. It's a more balanced and clear sounding pickup than a 59.

Not sure what the A5 78 would be closest to.

I'm more of a fan of A5 than A2 because I like tight low end, neutral mids, and snappy highs.

Close but still not quite as hot as the jazz neck. I think it still sounds a little different for some reason in my LPC.

I believe that APH and '59 are identical pickups except for slightly different number of winds and the magnet of course. So you'd get a slightly underwound '59.

I wouldn't recommend ripping a '78 apart for magnet swaps. It brings top money sold used.

+1 I have a jazz neck in one of my other guitars, and the aph5 sounds like it has more personality, but not as much as a 59.

No way. I have done magnet swaps b/w both pickups and they sound way different.

Do they both use the same gauge wire?
