Anyone tried Seymour Duncan Custom Shop “Scooped” pick ups?

No demos anywhere. But they’re replicating the John Mayer scooped mid Strat pickups.

I’m thinking about them but also leaning toward Antiquities II Surfer.

I haven't had anything bad come out of the shop....might wanna try for both!

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't heard (or actually heard of) this set. I can see how it would be cool. That being said, the Antiquity Surfer II is one of my absolute favorite true single coil pickups.

We can see from this pic that the DC R values of the "scooped" set are ~ 5.85k, 6.3k and 7.3k .

According to a post on the internet http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html/searchthreadgateway.php?topic_number=762098

The Big Dippers are generally regarded to be:

Bridge - 7.5k Ohms
Middle - 6.4k Ohms (RWRP)
Neck - 6.1k Ohms

But remember--getting a set of pickups doesn't get you close to an artist's tone unless you use the same strings, effects, amp, etc. And that's just to get you into the ballpark.

Close enough I suppose, but I wouldn't pay custom shop prices for something as readily available as alnico 5 strat pickups of these general DC R values.

^ DCR doesn't equate to tone, output nor many other aspects. So your idea of merely replicating a poor measure of pickup specification to ensure the same pickup is nonsense.

The Fender Big Dippers seem only available in the John Mayer sig strat - something no longer made now that he's not a Fender artist. So the scooped ones from SD are actually the cheap option here.

With Strat pickups, it mostly does. They're so uniform in layout and simplistic in terms of material interactions that the transfer function of the pickup correlates closely with the wind count, which in turn correlates closely with the DC resistance.

I didn't doubt they existed, but it is cool to see the box. I bet they sound really good.

better is subjective but spec wise, that should be a nice sounding set

One thing I see in the "Big Dipper" specs is a 5k range neck and a 7k range bridge. That's not something you see too often. Usually the entire set is "hot" or "vintage". Fender, SD and others might do well to have a set that pairs an especially bright neck pickup with an especially hot bridge.

The real Big Dippers (and I imagine these are a clone of them) are a great set of calibrated pickups. Articulate in the neck but still some oomph in the bridge. Of course great 2/4 sounds. The lore is that they are based on Mayer’s personal Texas Specials that happened to be underwound from the factory. So if that’s true, you can imagine them being the thinner PE Texas Special wire that’s wound to three different specs.

Regarding the two Duncan sets, the Surfers are the classic 60’s Strat sound, the Big Dippers (and I assume these as well) are a variant on the standard Strat tone. If this will be your main Strat, I’d go Surfers, but if you already have a 60’s style Strat, the Scooped ones would be a nice alternative.

Sorry, should have been clear...better for playing in a jam band that focuses on Grateful Dead, Clapton, Allman Bros (with a John Mayer tone-ish!)! And also from a home based tone, always striving for that Stevie Ray sound, without the over bite-y Texas Specials -- have those and don't love them.

Depending on your amp and pedals I think either would work well. I’m slightly more inclined to say Surfers as the slight mid bump would benefit the jam band type stuff and they are pretty close to the pickups Stevie actually used. (Selfishly I want you to get and post a review of the Scooped ones. ;))

Mid scoop tends to make you disappear as soon as other instruments are added in.

which is one reason why tube screamers work so well with old school scooped fender pups

Re: Anyone tried Seymour Duncan Custom Shop “Scooped” pick ups?

I don't see the vintage strats as mid scooped by themselves - unless they've purposely been wound to be so. Certainly not the 10 or so variants I've tried anyhow. The 2/4 positions do get mid scooped by comparison.

Think CS69 Scooped, not Mesa V EQ Scooped.

And yes, they work great with Tube Screamers, Klons and other mid humped ODs.
