Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

For what I'm looking for, this axe seems to have it. I love the looks, the configuration and the price tag :)

For anyone who has played it, I have a few questions :burnout:

How is the quality? (I would assume Fender Custom Shop-esque or atleast American)

How is the neck? (this is the biggie) Is it a thin one or medium C or what?

I'm gonna be tearing out the pickups anyhow, but this guitar really strikes my fancy (can't say that about many). Anyone?

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

G&L quality is very high. The neck is where it gets tricky. G&L, necks are hand made, and no two are alike. They have several neck size & shape options. I've seen G&L necks from small to huge. Go for the Legacy, you won't be disappointed. Those stock G&L single coils are quite good, give them a chance before you change them. I think the humbucker is a Duncan JB.

Nice! Thanks a lot Sprinter! So I guess if I order it online, I'll have to ask them to find me my size neck. It really caught my eye and the price was so low I couldn't believe it (after looking at 2 grand guitars, a grand guitar seems inexpensive). Looks like I better get out the camera and start selling :bigthumb:

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

Another G&L Legacy player here.

The quality is great! You won't regret buying a G&L.

I agree on the stock pickups. I have the standard Legacy and so far have only changed out the bridge pickup to put a JBjnr in.

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

Thx Jonny. I'm feeling good about buying this already. The countdown begins :D

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

I played a used G& L Legacy at Daddy's Junky music in Boston on Thursday. They have a lot of mid range guitars there(many strats and ibanezs) I loved the neck on the G&L maple with HUGE frets. The intonation felt great the whole way up. This G&L was head and shoulder above all teh strats they had.

I didn't care much for the pickups as far a I could tell. But If I had about $450 sitting around for a guitar I'd have bought it gladly

where can you get them online?

Sprinter was very kind and told me that I'd have great luck with that online store Bass and Treble music. So that's a place where I could look.

Unfortunately, there is no place around here where I can play this model of G&L, but due to the things I've heard about them, I'll order without even playing it (of course I'll want a medium C profile neck ;) ).

Thx for the review as well FenderBoy :)

I was never impressed by the quality of Fender Strats, so G&L should give me everything I've been looking for... (I'm just dying for a strat now... don't understand it :32: )

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

I've been gassin' for a legacy HB or a invader as well...

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

Man, they have pretty good prices there.

I really like the look of this S500 they have too:

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

G&L Legacy HB is my dream guitar...when it came down to either getting one of those or building myself a Warmoth, I picked the Warmoth 'cuz my playing can't match a G&L's quality yet :D

I say go for it! I definitely want one before too long, maybe as my first well-kept, well-treated guitar? hahaha...

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

Legacy necks seem to be more consistently medium C profiles. G&L is odd with their necks. Almost everyone I pick up feels slightly different. That fact might make you want to do some driving to a G&L dealer. You'll get a better deal on Ebay. There's an ebay store 'Oklahoma City Guitars?' They're a big G&L dealer. I've had a few G&L's and surprisingly, my favorite is my Invader. That's my 'fast player.'

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

I have played a g&l legacy hb, very nice guitar indeed. I own a gibson lp axcess
alex lifeson model and have owned many prs and an early model valley arts and I can tell you that legacy fits, feels, plays and sounds as good as any of the guitars I have owned. The c shape neck is a fat feeling neck, my les paul axcess
Is larger neck. I like fatter necks. Im not knowledgeable about the electronics but that little switch down
There by the toggle switch is pretty slick, the tones you can get are endless and all sound great. My friend
Who ownes this guitar is a walking encyclopedia of music and starting playing pink floyd shine on you crazy
Diamond and me and his brother were in awe of the tone, I swear it was like hearing david Gilmore play
It himself. This is a guitar I am seriously considering buying and adding to my collection.

You cannot go wrong buying one.

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

You'll love the guitar!!! G&L's are awesome guitars, they kind of picked up & kept going where Fender just stopped? You should give the stock pups a try before ripping them out, they are also amazing! The P/T/B EQ system is far better than anything Fender has done! You can pretty much set up for any amp by only touching the guitar??? As far as the differences between the G&L Tribute Series Legacy HB' and the 'G&L USA Legacy HB, they say it's just where they are assembled? The pickups & P/T/B system is supposed to be exactly the same, all the electronics are made in the U.S. & then sent overseas for assembly, but if this is true the tribute models don't have the same Q.C. standards as the USA ones? Still, I'd take a G&L tribute Legacy over a USA standard Stratocaster any day!!! The necks are closer to a vintage style Fender soft C neck, they have a bit more girth to them & larger frets than a modern Strat?

Thanks for the reply!!!!!!
It would be nice if they both are the same guitar, but I don't get why the 'G&L Tribute Series Legacy HB' is worth 500 dollars and the 'G&L USA Legacy HB' is worth 1500 dollars.
and if we check in their website there is a little difference between both specs, but again, I don't know if they mistyped the specs or ......

Re: Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

The USA-made Legacy is a nicer guitar, IMO. I own 18 of the USA G&Ls, but I have played the Tributes. I think the Tributes are really nice guitars--I prefer the USA guitars. If you don't feel a difference and don't want to spend the extra money....go for the Tribute. Or buy a USED G&L.

One thing I've noticed is that IME, the necks are fantastically similar. I think 12 of mine feel EXACTLY the same; the others might vary slightly, but not enough to throw me when going from one guitar to another. I have maple, RW and ebony fingerboards, too. Not bad for being hand finished.

FYI, most parts are not interchangeable with Fenders. Can't put a Fender neck on a G&L, or vice-versa. Different neck pocket geometry. The DF Vibrato is a Leo Fender design and is designed to float. Mine have proven to have more tuning stability than some friend's guitars with Floyds.

I think they are still using the JB in the bridge position, and they use 250K pots I think, which I think is the best setup for the JB with a coil-split. The single coils are CLF-100s, made by G&L. The original Legacys used Duncan SSL-2s; I have guitars with both sets, and I hear very little difference, if any. Both are very good vintage-style pickups.

Another good G&L shop is "The Guitar Store" in Seattle.

Anyone tried the G&L Legacy HB?

Yep. It's as good a value as you can get in an American made Strat-type guitar. Make sure you look at their custom options before just buying one off the shelf. You can pick various necks and fret sizes, you can get rosewood, ebony, or maple fretboards, and any of their colors that you want (they must have about 40 or 50 of them to choose from). You can even have the factory do some things that aren't on the standard options list, like deleting the fret markers or using alternate woods (like pine, empress wood, etc). For very minimal upcharges, you can get a Fender custom-shop quality instrument that is built to your specs (within the list of what they offer), for about 1/3 the price.

Their standard neck (which 99% of G&Ls that you will find in stock have) is a medium C with a 1-5/8" nut, a 12" radius, and tall medium frets. It's not a particularly attractive standard neck IMO, though both of my Legacys do have it, and I can deal with it fine. I just prefer 7-1/4" radius and vintage style skinny frets if I have a choice.
