Anyone try KT77's in their 6L6 amp?

Re: Anyone try KT77's in their 6L6 amp?

just saw these http://www.torresengineering.com/newnewbthetu.html on the torres site
I have always prefered using a heavy crunch over most lead channels and EL34's seemed to do this best, I will soon be receiving a peavey Ultra that is fixed biased for 6L6's and wonder if this will work
Im thinking this would give that amp a flavor I would heavily dig

as long as you're going to bias them properly, go for it. I briefly used JJ KT77 in a 6L6 Mesa (had an EL34 switch though) and they were good tubes. Not as harmonically rich in the midrange as the siemens/RFT or other good EL34, but I definitely preferred them to the 6L6 in the Mesa.

the fundamental frequency of the bass will be shifted upward but the amp should not sound thin with the KT77

Re: Anyone try KT77's in their 6L6 amp?

my amp is 6L6 and fixed bias, but torres says it will work in PeaV 6L6 amps
I will email torres to make sure they can be used without a resistor change

Re: Anyone try KT77's in their 6L6 amp?

torres dont seem to like talking to customers Im passing the middle man and going to Bob at www.eurotubes.com

I don't agree with Bob's "put-JJ-in-everything" mentality BUT . . . he matches tubes well and provides good customer service and has good prices.

if you're looking for JJ specifically, he's the man to go to. let us know how they work out.

I don't trust Torres.:28: His marketing hype supersedes his mods IMO. And he can't remember his own Hype?

They will match up to a 6L6 output transformer perfectly!!
there is a consideration regarding the current draw of the filaments. A 6L6 uses .9 to 1 amp per tube filament current. the KT77 uses 1.4 amp. Some marginal amps will be stressed if they were built to just barely handle the 6L6,
The Fender HotRod and Deville series are pretty good amps
the Fender Hot rod deluxe and blues deluxe are marginal amps for example

I wouldn't believe anything DT has to say...check your available heater current before you plug some KT anythings in a 6L6-designed amp or you could wind up with a toasted PT.
