Anyone used a Keeley Seeing Eye Mod DS-1

Re: Anyone used a Keeley Seeing Eye Mod DS-1

Didn't do it for me...lost the subtle, bluesy quality I like and made the pedal to grainy and fuzzy and just not appropriate for my playing style. I prefer my unmodded MIJ DS-1...just sounds more "natural" and I can leave it on all the time if I want to and go from clean to very overdriven with my Tele's volume control. John knows somes tricks for modding those DS-1's that might be better than the seeing I mod. Lew

Interesting, thanks Lew. In that case, I might pickup up an old cheap DS-1 and mod it myself then.

(btw I was told those alnico 4 magnets arrived ages ago, so thanks again)

You're welcome! Look for a Made in Japan DS-1. I think they are about 5% more toneful than the Made in Taiwan DS-1...tho the MIT DS-1 is just fine too! Lew

I got mine from Lew ^ !!

Amazing pedal for the type of music I play - I play fast/progressive rock - satch, vai, eric johnson.

The pedal is very transparent. If you set it to a setting that matches your clean setting - the tone is very well preserved from the cleans when driven.

On the bottom of my signature theres a clip of me doing a StarCraft theme song with this distortion pedal.
(I have the ULTRA mod, but in the recording i was using the SEM setting all throughout)
The distortion I have set CRANKED all the way. (100%)
The tone i have ALMOST completely out. (5%)
And thelevel is also barely there. (5%)
I like smooth distortion thats why I did it - but thats the smoothest I can get out of a fender frontman preamp :) :)

Bear in mind that i was playing through a fender frontman 15r preamp directly into my soundcard + cakewalk sonar 2.0
So the sound quality is a tad fuzzy.

I'm more of a rootsy, bluesy kind of player...but I like Jeff Beck alot! I got that modded DS-1 I traded to you from Burkweiser. It sounded great for heavy stuff, but for the rootsy stuff I do, and for getting that growly Jeff Beck kinda thing he does on his low E String, I just liked the less over the top tone of my old unmodded MIJ DS-1 a little better. Just personal taste. Lew

I have the Keeley Ultra mod DS1 and it does the singing, sustain for days lead that you hear Satch and Vai do. For blues, not so good, but if you are into shreddin` then this is it.

There's a thing that Albert Collins does, and also Jeff Beck, where they'll prebend a note on the low E string ( like a G bent up to between G and A ) and then up-pick it to get a little harmonic mixed into a growly sort of moan/tone as they release the prebent note.

The unmodded DS-1 focuses right in on that tone and does that tone better for me then the Keeley modded DS-1. But none of my friends play that lick! My buddy AJ played the Keeley modded DS-1 and much prefered it over the unmodded version. Lew

The Ultra mod is superior to the Seeing Eye mod IMO. If you buy the Ultra you get both too.

The Ultra mod is just a few more cap upgrades and an extra switchable diode for more low end.

I bought my Ultra DS-1 from mrid, and I have to say that it's one of the best gain pedals I've ever had. It's like what you think a DS1 should sound like but never does... :D expanded tonal range and output, as well as better overall tone and dynamics.
