Anyone using a WGS veteran 10"?

What can you tell me about it?

I'm looking for an inexpensive upgrade to my crappy Marshall 1x10 cab and so far it seems like this is about the only reasonable option available to me.

I say that b/c I want to stick with a 16ohm speaker, so I can use both my cabs at the same time with one amp if I feel like it. And apparently, as e discovered, 16 ohm 10" speakers are not really popular.

I was quite interested in some Jensen offerings but they are stupid expensive to get here since there is no Canadian distributor at present.

The celestion speaker I wanted to get is apparently available in 16ohms according to celestion's site but when I contacted the Canadian distributor, I was told that the 16ohm version is reserved only for OEMs and not available to the public.

So end of story the only feasible option is a WGS Veteran 10". And there's not a whole lot of information about it available.

I would like to know how it compares to other WGS or celestion speakers

Re: Anyone using a WGS veteran 10"?

I haven't tried that speaker, but I've used the 12" Veteran 30, and the Celestion G10 Vintage that the vet 10 is based on. Bother are great sounding speakers, and sound pretty close to each other, a little tighter, punchier low end on the 10". It should definitely improve the sound of your amp.

Re: Anyone using a WGS veteran 10"?

Hmm I was under the impression that the 10" veteran was based on the Jensen C10Q, as per http://wgs4.com/sites/default/files/WGS-2014-tonechart.pdf

Despite the naming I don't think the vet10" has much at all to do with the vet30/vintage30 and I have no idea how it relates to the G10 vintage or how the G10 vintage relates to the C10Q.

I thought 10" speakers would be more ubiquitous among guitarists.

So it is, got confused by the name and didn't fact check. I did YouTube the wgs and it sounded really good

Re: Anyone using a WGS veteran 10"?

well I pulled the trigger. Cheap and cheerful upgrade for the Marshall cab. From what I gather, it is based on the Jensen C10Q, but more like the smoother, warmer, woodier USA-made vintage C10Q rather than the supposedly bright/harsh sounding Reissue C10Q currently being manufactured in Italy.

hopefully will arrive in a few days.

I'm curious about the WGS 10" Green Beret. I'm looking at putting it in my Marshall MG30. I use it just for practice.

Re: Anyone using a WGS veteran 10"?

I used to own a couple of Retro 30s in an X pattern with a couple of early 80s Celestion G12-65s in my old 4x12 cab. Loved the Retro 30s.

then after I got rid of the 4x12, I got a custom 2x12 and put a Retro 30 and an ET65 in. A bit brittle at first, but after breaking them in, great tones, love both speakers. They both sound great under the scrutiny of a mic, and it's stupid easy to get good recorded tones with either speaker.

I'm pretty much comfortable buying any WGS speaker at this point. Just a matter of finding the right voicing, power handling etc.

The 10" green beret is a pretty new offering. They're also working on a 10" Retro, which is supposed to be released within the next few months or so.

....aaaaaaand the dealer i bought from was out of stock.

Now I wait for 3 weeks.

Re: Anyone using a WGS veteran 10"?

I love WGS too, but I was really unsure about this speaker. I really wanted something more british sounding.

I ended up ditching the WGS and instead grabbed an Eminence/Vox OEM speaker based on the 10" Ramrod - british vibe, 75W handling, 96db sensitivity so it won't sound way off compared to my other speakers (it's about the same as the WGS ET65 in my 2x12 - the Retro30 is a bit higher at 99 or maybe 101db). Supposed to be a pretty thick/meaty sounding speaker, a bit warmer with a fatter low end), so this should be nice in my cab. It's the speaker that supposedly comes stock in the Vox AC15. Cheap and cheerful, and it should be lightyears better than the crappy speaker that's in the cab right now.

Ok. That was anti-climactic. I read this whole thing because I'm looking to buy one of these speakers. Does anyone have a good recommendation for this speaker or something else low-wattage of equal quality and price? I need to replace a failed speaker in a 1962 Gibson GA5-T Skylark amp.
