Anyone using different pickups accross the fretboard?

I'm sure others have thought this over, but when I play high notes I tend to use neck pickups to add more body, but when I play low notes I tend to move to bridge pups to get more detail and definition.

Has anyone tried to find the sweet spot with a pickup per string, varying the distance for each from the bridge, or tried half a strat pup in bridge position to cover bass strings and half a strat at neck to cover trebble strings?

I've searched a bit and found some discussions covering hybred bass/guitars but no luck regarding 6 strings.

Sounds like the impetus for the 5-2 pickups from Duncan

Re: Anyone using different pickups accross the fretboard?

I do exactly this (so does Steve Morse, btw). There really isn't a 'sweet spot' for me- it varies on amount of gain, the part of the song, etc. I just switch when I know it is time to switch, I guess.

G&L makes a split pickup. Don't know where else you would find a half coil pickup to try it. Unless you knock half the slugs/screws out of a couple pickups.

I don't tend to want to make every note sound the same tonally. I generally use the pickups and the fret position to highlight the opposite. Thats why I have multiple pickup guitars - so I have different tones.

Not trying to get the same sound, thinking about getting a different sound that is very close to what I achieve with lots of switching.

In a way it's a lot like choosing the best pickup for a guitar. When we say this pickup is too bright we might be saying that the treble strings are where we hear the brightness. When we say this pickup it's too muddy we might be saying that the bass strings are sounding flabby.

There is also the flexibility in this mind experiment to change the Timbre of specific strings... Ie treble strings are more overwound than base strings.

Does anybody know how the Zex coils are made? The idea of dedicating one or two polls to a set of strings might work very well here.

I don't know if that is exactly possible-
There isn't a location that is perfect for everything (at least for me). If I am down low on the low strings, it is always the bridge pickup. If I am up high, it is always the neck. I don't see how you could mimic that tone with a single fixed pickup.

Not a single pup. Think 2 string pickups. Probably not exactly in these positions, but imagne picking up e and a with 1 coil near the bridge, another 2 string pup in the middle for dg and another near the neck for b and e.

could be done fairly easily if you could find someone to wind you the pup. its not a new idea, this is sorta the reverse of what you are talking about

Bingo. Ive wound some unusual pups before but thinking about getting a little crazy.

For example, if I'm after 6 ohms total, I could make 3 * 2 string pups at 6 ohms each and run them parallel. But that's a lot if wraps for aeach 2 string coil.

I bet someones thought that part over, ie the Zex pups I mentioned earlier. I think they have a coil per string.

And yes, the easiest thing fir proof of concept would be to build that big Gibson pup going the opposite direction.

Ahh, see, if I am on the high strings when playing down low, I still use the bridge pickup. If I am up high, I use the neck pickup. So this idea isn't exactly what I thought it was.

Yeah, it's not normal in any way, but think I'm gonna give it a shot on a strat copy.. can't hurt anything.

rarely, but occasionally. I do that on the solo to Nothing But A Good Time

Just depends. It isn't a habit.
