Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Like the Drake, Mercury Magnetics, and such (heck I don't even know if I'm spelling their names right). What are some major differences? What kind of OT does a Recto have? Other manufactures? Where in the world are you finding this information?:laugh2:

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Try the OT forum!

......sorry, couldn't resist it :D

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Mercury Magnetics and DeYoung Industries are typically the top output transformers used in the top dollar amps. In fact that's where most of the money is spent.

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Anyone know how difficult it is to swap OTs? Is it just a wire it up and rebias kinda deal?

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Swapping out the OT is normally 3 wires on one side (primary) and the speaker outputs on the other side (up to 5 wires at times) (secondary). On some amps the most difficult thing is getting access to the mounting bolts.

Heyboer makes great trannies as well and they're priced right.

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

I just bought one of Trace's(VoodooAmps) MM OTs for my 50 watt Marshall and a MM choke....Trace says this should be the end all for my already great sounding amp!

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Sweet...I might have to look into swapping the OT in my DSL. Seems like a pretty easy mod as long as I can fit the new one on there. Are the OTs available in reasonably standardized physical sizes? e.g. Can you get one that mounts the same way as the old one?

I've been meaning to upgrade the OT in my C30 as well. It'd be great to get an OT that doesn't blow up at 8ohms! :D

Just wanting to upgrade.....I have an O.E.I OT in my amp now,but Trace is really recommending the Custom MM and the new choke...:bigthumb:

Down the road I may go MM PT also?

Not sure on your particular series amp,but the ones for the 800,1987,1959,JTM 45 etc....are..

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Any particular characteristics to any OTs?

Also, Back when I had it, I looked into haveing my TSL modded by VooDoo and they recommened replacing the OT and if I recall it was going to require a bit of work because the TSL doesn't match up with the OT that he suggested (MM) very well. He suggested it because the TSL and DSL series OT's are not that great. However they say the recto's OT are conciderably better and don't really need to be replaced.

Anyway to find out what kind of OT is in a recto? And/Or how it would change the sound.

Thanks STRATDELUXER97, and keep us up to date on that mod.:fing2:

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Not to hijack this, but is the PT as important to the tone of the amp as much as the OT?

The MM OT I got from Trace is more than likely the one he would have fit to your DSL.....Pricey sucker!

One of the things I like about Mesa is how they don't skimp on components...sure they're PCB, but they use high end caps, transformers, etc...

The power trnsformer is not as important to tone as the OPT. Any minor diffrences in voltage or current supply from one PT to another, are probably largely overshadowed by the effects of the filter caps and the bias adjustment.

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

As I recall putting an upgraded plexi type OPT into a DSL makes it an incrediable amp, but does require some fabrication.

Traditionally 50 watt Marshalls used Drake, and 100 watt versions used Dagnell, although the very first 2 or 3 100 watt version used Drake as well. Modern transformers from these companies are not the same as back in the day. Hence the cottage industry of offering improved trannies for Marshalls. I recall reading reports of the modern Drakes being made in China, much like modern Celestions. The Dagnell used in the hand wired plexi JTM45/100 were re-issue tranny's based on the original specs and materials.

Hiwatts used Partridge trannies back in the day. These are now extinct AFAK.

Mesa originally used BF Fender trannies, but they then went to the same supplier as Fenders, IIRC Mallory, for both trannies and filter caps.

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Just so you know, the transformers in Marshall DSL's are a series made by Mercury Magnetics, called the Axiom Series. They also have wiring harnesses, so you don't even need a soldering iron to change them......as my memory serves.

By the way, Mercury Magnetics is 1 block from my home.

Re: Anyone want to give out some knowledge about different OTs?

Intersting...so what kind of difference would be expected changing from an Axiom to some other Mercury OT?
