Anyway to lighten Gibson pickguard?

I'd like to lighten my cream LP pickguard to a whiter cream, like the historics. I'd buy a historic pickguard, but have been told they won't fit regular LP's. Is this true? I was thinking of soaking mine in a tray of bleach for a week or two. Maybe coat it with some of that teeth whitening gel and let is sit in the sun. Anyone thought of or done this succesfully?

Re: Anyway to lighten Gibson pickguard?

I'm I getting the silent treatment, or has no one ever wanted a historic color pickguard on a LP?

Re: Anyway to lighten Gibson pickguard?

I'm not sure what would help as I've never tried to whiten plastic parts. I also don't know about the historic guards fitting different.

If you can't find a lighter colored one to buy, I'd just buy another one like yours and try some of the methods you mentioned. Just be careful as bleach might melt the plastic (:dunno:). I know sunlight can/will if you leave it exposed too long. Sunlight might also yellow the plastic.

Maybe try soaking it in oxy clean for a while?

Edit: Upon looking at pictures of a LP standard and a LP historic goldtop, I don't see any noticeable difference in the pickguard fit... but my eyes might be deceiving me.

Whitening it? Why not get some whiter plastic and have someone cut it and bevel it?

Maybe some alchohol but I'm just thinking out loud. Was it really white when you bought it or do you want to make a creamy looking (from the factory) plastic whiter? Don't know if you can but, again, I'm just thinking out loud.

Just guessing, but maybe some of the chemical they sell at the drug stores to whiten dentures?? Shouldn't hurt it if it doesn't hurt the plastic teeth/gums.

But who the hell is it? I have been wondering for so long now.

I don't think you would be able to. It is that color through and through. You can turn them darker because you are staining the surface. I don't think you will beable to get it lighter.

Re: Anyway to lighten Gibson pickguard?

You can buy a Historic P-90 pickguard and cut it to fit a humbucker guitar. That's what I'm doing and a few others have done as well.

Re: Anyway to lighten Gibson pickguard?

The pickup spacing is supposed to be different on the Gibson Historic and the Gibson Authentic pickguards.

Also, I could be way off, but I think the the tooth bleaching solution will not work; the active ingredient in these solutions is most often oxygen peroxide, and if I remember correctly this will only dissolve organic material.

I think the best solution is to let it sit in the sun for days (or weeks) and let the UV rays take care of fading the dyes. Or have a pickguard custom made.
