APH-1/SH-11 combo

As many of you know I have been looking for a set of pickups for a bright guitar, I have landed on an Alnico II pro, and a Custom Custom...I think! I have a few questions about this combo if you guys can help...

-will these pups be muddy

-is the output too low...what i mean is if I switch guitars mid set...will I have to tweek the amp

-how do either or both of these pups sound split

-and last but most important... :laugh2: , should I do a Zebra neck, and a black bridge or 2 zebras :laugh2: :laugh2:

Anyway...thanks to everyone that helped me through the board, PM's and even phone calls (John, and Kevin...thats guys), as well as Alex and Scott

Re: APH-1/SH-11 combo

They shouldnt be muddy, The output should be somewhere in the middle (you shouldnt have to tweak much) I have no idea how they sound split, I like the zebra neck and the black bridge, That is what I have in my ibanez LP. But, All of this depends on your guitar, your amp, your previous pickups. What exactly are you playing and playing through?

Re: APH-1/SH-11 combo

hey bro...... i used to use a CC/ PG (PG and APH are somewhat similar i suppose) combo in my CRAPPY ibanez beginner guitar..... but i made some sound clips, including one with both pickups split and combined

check em out here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/voodoohippiemusic.htm

obviously, there is the CC demo........ but the song "Mysterious Journey" features the CC and PG neck split and combined........ i love the sound of 2 buckers split and combined, however i dont know if i care for them much split by themselves

as far as characteristics...... the CC definately has creamy treble sounds, very warm and a bit twangy clean...... almost like a Tele sound, just obviously a lot less chimey and responsive and dynamic....... but its clean tone is fairly useable..... the bass was a bit loose tho, i think this may have to do with the crappy guitar and all tho........ in a bright guitar like yours, i bet it will be fine......... and even tho it was loose, i didnt think it was ever too muddy or anything.....

under overdrive, it is very smooth and all those mids make it feel very comfortable, like you can just dig in and get real huge mean bends..

Re: APH-1/SH-11 combo

I found the APH-1 and CC combination to be pretty similar in character in my rig. Both have a nice warm midrange. Both have nice, subdued high ends. The APH-1 just sings in the neck, and the CC has much of that same character. In single coil mode, the APH-1 sounds pretty crisp. The top end get's a bit clearer but not over bright. The CC has a warm bridge tone with a subdued top end. Not twangy, more "buttery" to my ears (sounds like I'm talking about a wine, don't it  ).

Probably a pretty good combination if the guitar is overly bright. Personally, I found them a bit too similar in characteristic tone with heavier distortion, but that's with my rig, my guitar.

Re: APH-1/SH-11 combo

this is my main question...most of my guitars have buckers...I want to know if there will be a big output drop from one guitar to the other...I play a Tele with a Jazz and a JB, a Love Rock with w/ a Seth Lover and a pearly Gates. and a Moderne with a pair of 59's...If I go with the APH-1/SH-11 combo, will I have a drop in output?

And you're right theodie...I'm gonna go with a zebra and a double black! :)

Re: APH-1/SH-11 combo

I noticed right away that the CC was hotter than the PG, and the APH-1 is hotter than the Jazz, so I think it should fit right in the with rest level-wise.

Re: APH-1/SH-11 combo

Output wise, I think it'l romp! The only hotter guitar you have is the JB/Jazz equipped one, and I think that the CC/APH would compliment that guitar very well. When both are split, you get a lot more air to your sound and the lows are much snappier than when in series humbucking mode. These pickups are not muddy, but they are warm sounding, mostly due to the low midrange frequencies.
