Re: APH1 or Pearly for neck pup on a les paul?

TWo questions:

#1 What do you plan on playing with this guitar?

#2 How does the neck position of the guitar sound in general?

Played/owened them both - own a few neck PG's currently. Might recommend either depending...

I prefer the PG as I find it brighter and clearer on the top end. It is a perfectly balanced pickup for the neck position of a Les Paul.

You can get very close to the APH1 tone with a PG by rolling the tone knob back a little.

1)Classic Rock=Led Zep,Aerosmith.ZZ top,Bluesy impros
2)Weak and dull,am also considering not to have a neck pup ,just 2 bridges

I voted A2P. I have an A2P set and a PGN set, both in LP's. The neck A2P I lowered a bit and it sounds great. That didn't work with the PGN and I had to put in an A3 to get more treble from it (too rounded on top).

Yes, you can do it, but a bridge PU will be wound hotter, and will be a little darker in the neck slot. Is that what you want?

Re: APH1 or Pearly for neck pup on a les paul?

Would you like to stay with humbuckers? Otherwise, what about a GFS Mean 90? I've just put one of this in my Epi Jr. bridge position and I think it is the best sound I got in a long time.

I'm with Aceman on this, especially if you think your pickups are dull. I'd try the PG neck.

To answer your question as to why the bridge pickup will sound darker; bridge pickups in modern sets are a bit hotter than the neck pickup. This is done to make up for the difference in output and tone between pickups. For our purpose, a pickup wound hotter will generally sound darker.

But it will be pretty much the same if it gets adjust correctly as a bridge?

i picked The AII. I have it in my Les Paul and love it. I am not dissing the Pearly gates, I just don't have any experience with them.
