Anyone taken the plunge yet? I was disappointed to see no discounted upgrade price break for existing users. Are the changes essential or is the package being dumbed down into a sort of Garage Band Pro?

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I haven't looked into it much, but what I've seen looks great. I think the price is pretty reasonable, considering that "upgrade" costs for that other DAW are even higher. I'm working on my EP in Logic 9 Pro and have one more song to track guitars on, so I'm going to wait to upgrade. That's really the only thing holding me back.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I went for it. :deal:

On first encounter, Logic Pro X looks like the lovechild of Logic Pro 9 and Reaper. (I half expect to find the words "Don't Panic" written somewhere in large friendly letters.) The program installs with its own icon rather than overwriting itself onto Logic Pro 9. Thus, I currently have the two available to run side by side.

Most of the functions are the same as before. Some have been renamed. A few are new.* There are some nice touches to the GUI layout. Now, the edit window sizing controls are set well in from the edges. No more nonsense with the dock appearing and obscuring the thing that you want to click with your mouse. Some of the built-in virtual instrument graphics are a bit "Garage Band" but this is understandable with the ever-increasing integration of Apple device operating systems.

Pre-existing LP9 project Assets are retrieved from hard drive, loaded and, later, saved to a new LP10 directory.

In the long term, for me, this new generation DAW is going to be costly. It makes it all too obvious that my 2007 MacBook is ready for retirement.

* - These changes have implications for your editing keyboard. Third party editor's keyboards, overlay skins or key stickers will now have the incorrect terminology on them. D'oh!

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I'll probably take the plunge soon. I'm wrapping my head around 35Gb of downloadable loops & stuff.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

The download process offers the option to receive all of the Apple Loops library schtuff later.

In the Logic 8 days, the Apple library data came as physical discs. I seem to remember being obliged to feed every single one of them into my laptop's optical drive for software security reasons.

It is undeniable that the change will be disruptive. Stick with LP9 until your current projects are complete. Transfer your Folders en masse later.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

If you are accustomed to the appearance of Logic Pro 9, LP10 looks like a cartoon reinterpretation. Less stern and forbidding, perhaps.

I stand by my first impression stated in post #3. This is not to knock the appearance. Adobe Audition CS5.5 has a very similar flat colour vibe. I guess that the solid expanses take less of a toll on monitor life.

Running a mouse over the toolbar menus, pretty much all of the features are where you would expect them to be. I have yet to try out all of the new features. The Drummer algorithm ought to make a change from my over-reliance on Spectrasonics. :)

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

It's only $199? Who's complaining about price?! Does anyone else here remember how much Logic PRO 9 was?

They had lowered it to $199 at least 1 year ago, probably more like 2.

Very good value, IMHO, given how many modules come with it that you have to pay extra for elsewhere.

Had to have been around or after March of last year. And how long was it out/how many people bought it at the original full package price? $199 for Logic 10, anyone with an iMac should jump on this.

I bought LP9 as an upgrade from LP8. That was roughly 300GBP (well over 400USD). Lotta money for a boxful of manuals and a bunch o' plastic discs.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

Even though I am not a MAc user so I can't use Logic at home the layour of the new plugins and VI's are alot nicer and more proffessional looking to me, I am hoping my uni upgrades as the only DAW other then Logic is Pro Tools there and I prefer Logic and Cubase for midi use.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I just fiddle with the controls until I like what I'm hearing. :D

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

The Drummer Track feature is already growing on me. I want to put it to the test against some of my ancient four track project archive material. Where the original recording was made with a rudimentary analogue BD, SD, CHH, OHH rhythm machine, it ought to be possible to replace the original beat component with the Drummer Track algorithm doing its stuff.

Most of the existing software instrument plug-ins are much as they were before. The analogue mono, poly and Ensemble simulations work as well as before. Generic synthetic sounds are easy to create. What Logic cannot do is mimic the characteristics of the all-time classics. This is my excuse for owning two Creamware ASB products and gassing for a third (or a Dave Smith Pro 12).

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I have EZDrummer plus a bunch of other soft synths and plug-ins, so a lot of the extra crap is lost on me. I'm more interested in the core system upgrades and UI improvements.

Features that interest me:

- Smart controls (depending on how they implemented it)
- Track stacks (I can see this being great for instruments with multiple mics, or re-amping)
- Groove Track

And if they've improved 9's extremely irritating MIDI editing, I'd consider that a big plus.

Aside from that, it looks like everything else I use Logic 9 for is pretty much the same. I just have to decide if the above three things are worth $200 to me.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I am content with my purchase. I was on the brink of ordering one of those third party, colour-coded editing keyboards for Logic 9. That device would have been less than ideal for Logic 10. I can lie to myself that the money I "saved" by not buying the editing keyboard has paid for two thirds of the new DAW.

With the impending launch of another generation of Mac OS, it is possible that Logic 10 is that bit more future-proof than 9.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

I have to say that this is a big deal.

A lot of people were afraid that Apple would either get out of the professional DAW market and not do a Logic 10, or would morph it into some dumped down consumer thing.

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

Oh man, I just finished tracking guitars on my little EP today. I really have no excuse not to upgrade now...

Re: Apple Logic Pro 10

In my opinion, what Apple is doing is corralling its target market in readiness to direct as many customers as possible towards the new Mac Pro desktop computer and accompanying Thunderbolt accessories.

Mackie, to name but one, already makes audio control devices that connect to an iPad. Expect them to soon offer a controller device for Logic Pro 10, using the Thunderbolt interface.

My 2009 iMac uses data streaming connection formats that are about to be superseded. My 2007 MacBook is reduced to the status of a glorified DVD player and repository for legacy software - just like my G5.
