APS1 vs SSL1s

As the thread title says. Whats the diff in tone, I have used SSL1's and loved them. I am sure the diff is more than just warmth with the Alnico II magnets in the APS1. And yes what guitars do you have them in.

Nice sig :-)

Have the A2PS set in my Lite Ash Stratocaster. The highs are still there, just not obnoxiously bright, not like broken glass. Now the "broken glass" sound is appealing in its own way, however.

The Lite Ash Stratocaster (swamp ash body, maple neck and fretboard) is probably a bad example for this, however, because it came with 500k pots. This made the pickups sound very punchy, though still vintage output.

The movers just packed up this guitar, and my amp, or else I would've recorded an example for you. Remind me in about a month.

Re: APS1 vs SSL1s

Thanks Robert... It would be going into an Alder body, with a rosewood fretboard.

Re: APS1 vs SSL1s

softer edges. softer attack. sweet sustain. less definition. more forgiving. A very supple and rewarding sound if you have a light touch. They seem a little noisier but that's probably because you have to turn up the volume/gain and a bit compared to ssl-1s.
Both are great strat pickup sets. Its just about what vibe you are after.

Re: APS1 vs SSL1s

I haven't played APSs but I love the SSL2s in my HSS that I've posted on here loads of times. I chose them as I wanted a more stereotypical Stratocaster vibe - bit scooped mid so the prominent high and low give the impression of more power, attack, chime, and piano-like clang. Both pups are very useable and sound great from clean to hard rock.

Some sounds.

Clean: neck, neck/middle, neck/bridge (split), bridge split, bridge full, all three with bridge split.

Dirt. Neck, middle (using coin as pick, so attack is a bit different); humbucker.

Because of the way my rig is, things get balanced out, so the SSLs don't sound too bright.

Re: APS1 vs SSL1s

I suggest splitting the difference. SSL-52 Five-Twos. Best of both worlds. :)

Re: APS1 vs SSL1s

the ssl1 is glassier for sure but the aps is still pretty dam stratty. it has a little more mids and a warmer tone but its not a big fat sounding pup.

Re: APS1 vs SSL1s

Do the APS sound better under gain for rock n roll tones than the SSLs which can kinda be stiff and harsh?
