Are all Customs the same pickup? just with different magnets?

I'm just curious. But are all Custom (Custom, CC, C5) pickups the same, but just different magnets? I'm sure they are a little different, but how much different are they? How will an alnico 5 in a custom custom sound compared to a Custom 5? or vise-versa(however you spell that)? How will a ceramic magnet in a custom 5 sound compared to a Custom? you know what i mean...

Yes, they are exactly the same pickup... and changing magnets will change them from a CC to a C5 or whatever.

Alex_in_Chains sent me an Alnico5 mag a while back, and a ceramic mag too... i shall have to swap them into my CustomCustom sometime.

Could somone point me in the right directio for changing magnets? If the Customs are truly only a difference in magnets.....I'd rather do this than buy a new pickup. I have no idea where to begin though. :smack:

Tell us what you are after. Then we could point to some directions as to which magnet to try.

Basically, there are 5 possibilities, ceramics (a custom); a5 (c-5); a4; a3; and a2 (CC).

I like the C-5 but craved a little more thickness in the mids and highs....that's it really.

Who knows? It's been brought up several times on here that there is a difference in the tone chart, but confirmed by SD that they all have the same specs. I guess adding a ".4" to that page must be a lot more difficult than it looks.

The difference is probably just a manufacturing tolerance difference of the 2 they happened to measure... I think EVAN stated a while back that the tolerance was +/- 5% or 10%

You might wanna check c3, but beware, it will not be a c5'ish CC, not CC'ish C5!
