Are any SD pups similar to the MIM Robert Cray pups?

LOVE my MIM Robert Cray tone.

LIKE my Deluxe Roadhouse Strat noiseless tone... really like the mid boost control though.

What I want is something closer to the RC tone in the Deluxe Roadhouse with the mid-boost. I don't want to install the boost circuit on the RC model... I want to keep that stock. Too much drilling and routing to do that mod.

What are my SD options to get me close to the RC tone?

i dont know what is in the mim rc strat. his tone sounds like a vintage type strat pup into a big clean amp for the most part. ssl1 is a good and easy to find option. not sure how noisy the preamp will be with non-noiseless pups

Re: Are any SD pups similar to the MIM Robert Cray pups?

They are custom to his specs. The staggered pole pieces are pretty unique as well.

I didn't think that the noiseless pickups could be purposely paired with the onboard mid-boost... Are all strats with that system loaded with noiseless pups?

After my OP, I remembered STRATosphere on Reverb... I could just get a set of the genuine RC pups for only $99...

I'll look at the ssl1 too. THanks.

I've played that guitar, and either an SSL-1 or an Antiquity Surfer will get you there. I am leaning towards the Surfer, though for this, as Robert's tone (to me) has a slightly rounded high end.

So... I'm still going around on this...

Mincer, you suggest the SSL-1 so what about the Classic Stack Plus set to stay in the "noiseless" realm with the Deluxe Roadhouse preamp setup?

the classic stack plus set is great! its as close to a great single coil strat but noiseless ive found

Have you had a chance to compare them to the Vintage Noiseless or any of the Bill Lawrence offerings? I know they are different animals and a bit of a departure from my original journey, but I've also been seriously thinking of the Lawrence L45 set.

Re: Are any SD pups similar to the MIM Robert Cray pups?

he Classic Stacks are a little hotter and a tiny bit rounder than vintage strat pickups, or something like the SSL-2 or Antiquity. But it is a magnificent Strat sound, and my favorite strat pickup of any kind.

Re: Are any SD pups similar to the MIM Robert Cray pups?

Wow. That's quite an endorsement. Maybe the Classic Stacks are the direction I need to go in the Roadhouse. I'm now thinking something "different" than the RC sound is the right thing to do with this guitar.

I just got home from a gig and the other guitar player's guitar was humming like a hive of bees (P90 equipped PRS S2) and my RC strat was really quiet, even in the non-cancelling settings with stacked OD going on for leads. And man oh man does that guitar sound good. I can live with its tiny bit of noise for that tone.

Here’s a non SD option. I’ve always wanted this set, but never a guitar to put them in. When this video was made they were a Johnny Hiland endorsed item, he no longer endorses them, but I think you can still get them as a special order from D. Allen.

They are a noiseless so you can use them with boost. They are the most single coil sounding humbucker I’ve ever heard. Great tone. You would have to email David Allen directly to get them because they aren’t on his website anymore.

OK guys, based on your input I think I would like to give the Classic Stack Plus set a try.

Here is the Service Manual for my guitar:
https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/...14730XXXX Service Manual REV A 01-27-2016.pdf

So, what I am wondering is this:
1) The CSP middle pup is RWRP but the Vintage Noiseless are not (as far as I can tell... the service manual shows they are the exact same pup.) Is that going to be an issue and if not, do I need to do anything special in the wiring diagram? (Remember this has the onboard preamp boost setup similar but not identical to the Eric Clapton mid boost)

2) The original pups are two-wire, the CSP's are three-wire. How do I incorporate the three-wire setup in the wiring diagram in the Service Manual?

But then, if I want this to be a "something different" guitar, would something like the Red Devil be a good choice for the bridge PU along with the middle/neck CSP's? BG is like top-three in my book and I do have a PRS Singlecut with PG's...
