Well, once audiences needed to hear the guitar through a PA system, pickup systems got better. The size of the guitar for live performance didn't matter as much anymore (at least to the audience). So for those players that usually play live and hear their guitars plugged in more than the actual acoustic sound, the size can be less relevant.
It is no different than a grand piano vs a top-of-the-line digital one. There is nothing like playing a grand piano or standing next to one when a good player plays it. However, to a large audience, it matters less (other than the imposing look of one). Grand pianos will never go out of style. But if you are touring, it isn't as relevant.
