After, talking to my gutiar tech....he feels that hand wound p'ups tend to be warmer. So we got to talking about how warm many Duncan p'ups happen tobe.....and thought that maybe Duncans are hand wound..........maybe only Custom shop?

Thanks.

i believe only antiquities and custom shop pups are handwound.. most likely by seymour himself =)

Seymour and MJ too I think. But yea, the only production that's hand wound that I know for sure is the Antiquity. And I believe Seymour himself winds those on the actual machine that Seth Lover used for original Gibson PAF's back in the day.

I think your tech is seriously full of ****. Wire type, gauge, material, number of turns, pitch, mag type etc matter. Hand wound or machine wound is just marketing.

Again, I only say this after it had been mentioned to me. But this blows the theory out of the water because you guys confirmed that production Duncans are not hands wound and they are warm and rich.:)

Check out Jim Wagner's site....great guy....but he also talks about how hand wound p'up tend to sound warmer.

"Warmth" is a product of the components used, and the specs used to wind a pickup.

The scatter winding of hand wound pickups may produce a harmonically richer, more complex tone. That's a result of some of the frequency cancellation of the random winding pattern.

For instance, of the production single coils I've tried in my strats, between the APS's and the SSL's, which are wound to similar specs, the APS's are warmer, due to the AII magnets.

Of the handwound strat pickups, my strat Antiquities have a little more subtle complexity and harmonic richness. Due to the AII magnets, they are also warmer than, say, the Harmonic Design Vintage Plus set they replaced, which used A5 mags, and were wound to be a little hot. Those sounded a bit bright and brash to me.

remember that not all pickups are made to warm - some of vintage type strat recreatons are made to be bright, just like the originals.

That is my take on it - someone correct me if I'm wrong, though. :)

Thanks Curly!

Doesn't this sound good though?
