are my pickups out of phase?

somtimes when i'm playing clean, i switch to the middle position (i have an ibanez artist w/jb bridge and stock neck pup) for a less harsh sound, but it gets quieter. neck pickup alone delivers normal volume and bridge pickup alone delivers normal volume, but when both are used together it gets quite a bit quieter. this causes problems because my guitar will get completely lost in the mix when i'm playing with the band...could the pickups out of phase or something?

Re: are my pickups out of phase?

Doesn't sound like they're electrically out of phase. If they were, the tone would get extremely thin and mosquito like.

When you combine the bridge and neck pickups the volume always drops a little...even when the pickups are wired correctly.

It's normal.

well thats crappy....there's nothing that can be done about it? i guess it makes me glad that i have the solo boost deal on my amp, because thats what i do now to take care of it.

Re: are my pickups out of phase?

You could turn this into an advantage: like, switch both pups on for a rhythm part that does not need to stand out from the mix, and when it's time to solo, choose just one of the pups for more volume and balls.

What you describe does not seem like they're out of phase - if they were, the sound would be overly clucky or tinny - too many highs, no bass and mids. Sometimes I wire pickups and when botha are on I wonder if they're out of phase because the sound is funky, and I rewire them only to discover that the other wiring is even funkier. So then I go back and try to live with it.

That's exactly how I use the two pickups combined on my Tele. The combined tone is my favorite tone for chords and rythym...at least for pop tunes! Lew

COME BACK!!!!

there IS something you can do about it. There is a store near my house that sells these little gadgets for about twenty bucks. They install them into the guitar, so when you swich to both, it increases the volume with a battery pack. Mine sounds almost the same. (bridge, and combined)

good luck!
