ARGH!!! crisis.. Strat problems, just swapped bridge bucker and the neck has gone!

Hey guys, i get so damn agitated when this happens haha.

Ive taken out the dimarzio of my strat in the bridge and replaced it for a seymour duncan. Now, ive looked at the colour coding dimarzio to duncan, and put the wires appropritately to where the old ones were. Hey presto, the new custom is alive in the bridge, as well as the old middle sngle coil.
I hit the coils with a allen key b4 i put it back together, and i could swear it was working, but there is a chance it wasnt.

So i get it all back together, put new strings on (floyd rose) plug in all excited only to find that my neck pup has stopped.

The only other signs which are weird is that when i select the neck and tap the bridge coil, there seems to be some activity.

If any of you guys can help in any way, i'll love you forever! Cos this situation is quite simply

:bsflag:

Really hoping this is a classic problem or something, as i cant see any loose wires.

Kev :grumble:

(cursed when it comes to strat wiring)

Dimarzio and Duncan use different color codes but it really shouldn't have affected the neck pup. Pics/ description of what you put where would be helpful

All the old pickup wires were left in place, and i just soldered the new wires to the old wires to save me melting my switches like I once did.

Old setup:

dimarzio black + white tapped together,
dimarzio red to pup switch.
dimarzio green and bare to back of volume pot in exact same place.

New setup:

duncan red + white tapped together
duncan black to pup switch
duncan green and bare to back of volume pot in exactly same place.

As for the single coils...

one has a red wire, one has a blue. Both of these are going to the back of the volume pot so i guess these are ground wires.

The white wires go to the same part of the pickup selector that they always have.

Now tempted to try connecting another single coil as a test, you cant exactly bust a pickup very easily can you?

Here's a couple of quick things to check ('til I can think of something more profound).

Its happened to me before, where, as I put the pickguard back into the body, the bare ground wire touched up against something it shouldn't. Like a lug of the 5-way. Make sure it doesn't touch anything.

Also, since you spliced wires onto other wires, look at those connections very carefully. I've seen where a not-so-neat solder connection had a sharp pointy "solder spear" that poked through insulation to touch something it shouldn't.

Gently wiggle the lugs on the 5-way. Make sure they aren't "turning" under wire tension and touching a neighbor.

Thats all I can think of at the moment. I might come up with more post-coffee. :)

Kev

revelation: a loose wire!!!!!! Duncan black has been found disconnected lol. I guess it snapped off wherever it was when i put the scratch plate back on.

Know where the duncan black is ment to go to artie? I think its supposed to go to the pup selector switch correct?

Bummer: It appears ive got a double whammy of failure here... the custom bucker has just come disconnected from its bit on the pup selector... which affects the neck in no way i guess :( :( :(

grr.

Thats correct. The black is the Duncan hot wire. As I said in my PM . . . double-check everything. ;)

Double checking finished, and no success :(

I'll get a picture up.

Sorry for the bumping guys, but other than this, i think its going to a tech...

All I can recommend is to take this schematic, substitute your bridge bucker for the bridge single (green/bare to ground, black to switch, red/white soldered together, covered with tape), and go over everything. You may even want to re-flow any solder connections that look suspect.

Well guys, just got it back up and running!

Remember this, if all is wired up correctly, look at your pickup and you'll find that one of the copper wire pieces on the pickup itself has snapped :crying:

Had to solder it back together :arms:
