I have a TPS, and like it a lot for recording. If you daisy chain two channels and use the warmer setting, you can record bass direct. My thought would be to try it, you may like it. If you live nearby, you're welcome to come over and check it out.
I have a ART OLP tube preamp. Nothing hits my soundcard without going into the ART 1 st. I can't say for certain is adds a considerable amount of warmth to my signal? But the limiting feature is usefull.

I think if you are going guitar signal into it and line level out (and the effects return is line level) it should be fine but im not to sure because i dont know how the art is specified but that is what seems to be standard with most preamps.
Yeah, you can get a solid +4db signal out of it. It has an output level control in addition to the tube gain control, so I would start with that all the way down and see what kind of level you get. I think it'll be fine. You just want to avoid hitting the effects return with a level that's hotter than the manufacturer planned for.
