Assymetrical Stack(s) ?

I searched first and didn't see this. My apologies if this is an old topic, I haven't been to SDForums in forever.

So, I've had some interesting tone from asymmetrically wound humbucking pickups. I don't mean "scatterwound" or a "little" asymmetrical, I mean intentionally seriously asymmetrical. I had a guy custom wind me one that has a tone I like very much, and certainly various folks are winding them asymmetrically ( does SD do this ?? They should ).

Now I'm wondering, is it done, or has it been done, here or elsewhere, to asymmetrically wind a stack? SD is home to the stack, yes? Would it be predicted to sound, uhm, asymmetrical, or different in some way compared to a "standard" stack winding? This would have to kick the door open on getting various tones others don't have / or that are hard to get etc.

I want to custom order one ( or ten ) but would be curious to hear what you guys think. I can write in to custom shop too.

Thanks !!

BTW I Have a ton of stored up cool posts on some guitars I mod'ed, and can prolly post sound clip(s) of pups.

Re: Assymetrical Stack(s) ?

They already do this. AFAIK most stacks are something like that. There's a coil that's wound to give the pickup it's main voice and characteristics. Additionally there's a much smaller coil that's basically wound just to cancel the hum, it doesn't pick up much from the strings, if anything.

The allegedly "better" sound of unmatched coils in a humbucking does not apply in humbucker stacked p'ups, due to the nature of the beast.

In a HB, winding a coil hotter than the other will have a different portion of the harmonic spectrum of the string to be stronger than the other one, giving a "better" sound to some.

OTOH, as the harmonic part of the string is the same in a stack design, it'll just be more/less noisy and/or more/less hot.

HTH,

Re: Assymetrical Stack(s) ?

what's cool about this concept is that the custom shop can make some really great noise-canceling singles, if you need. More than once I've thought about asking them to do a "stack plus" voiced like an antiquity surfer.
