ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

I think you could get close enough if you raise the midranges and the output levels all the way.

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

I found an article that says it’s 25db at around 500 Hz. That’s quite a boost. An EQ pedal can do that frequency but it’s hard to get an EQ pedal with that much added boost. Other than that, I think it would V work fine and be far more flexible.

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

there isnt 25db of mid boost, more like 15. the clapton preamp is actually two boost circuits, an always on preamp boost and an adjustable mid boost. if you used an eq pedal to push the 500hz-800hz area you should get close. it is nice to be able to only dial in what you need rather than the full shot on or off though

Thank you very much guys !!!!

I take it, this 9V battery mod can be done with any passive pick up set ?

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

the clapton preamp? yes. ive used it with antiquitys and classic stack + setups. the preamp is about the size of a credit card so you need to find a place to put it. i deck my trems so i put it and the battery in the back cavity after removing the claw and springs. on a different guitar, i routed under the pickguard. i swapped the tbx for a normal tone control after a while, liked it better that way

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

Jeremy - how did you like the mid boost + classic stacks? I have the same setup and find it to be very versatile with a bunch of tonal options available. Certainly the Antiquities sounded great too.

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

I’ve really become accustomed to having the boost / tonal options on my guitar after having a midboost + super nice pickups and tone pot. Jeremy is correct - 12 dB is an always on signal boost even with the midboost on zero. This makes the signal equal to mid gain humbuckers! You can dial that out on your volume knob and have a classic Strat output by setting it at 7-8 When you add on using a master tone knob, and the midboost you’ve got tons of versatility. Going from 7 to 10 on the volume dial is a 12 dB jump itself. That setup is an awesome one - not a traditional Strat setup though. But it’s kick- ass!

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

i ended up swapping the bridge classic stack+ for the vintage hot stack+ but i loved that setup. sadly, the guitar was stolen two years ago but it was a fantastic sounding instrument

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

I'm going to have try running my Strat through my MXR EQ with that 400 hz & 800 hz boost, just to see what this is all about. It's hard to imagine a Strat with mid boost. It's already a "jangly" instrument. To keep in the spirit of this, I'll use my Strat that had the EC mid boost removed. It's the one where the factory battery compartment made it the perfect vehicle for trying my Livewire Classic II's.

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

the mid boost works well, better with some amps than others. kicks ass into tweed fenders. you can take the spanky jangly mid scooped strat pups and make em really thick and fat

Re: ATT : Strat Gurus ! Eric Clapton Mid Boost mod vs an EQ pedal.

Yes, I have two single channel amps - a PRRI and a Blackstar studio 10 EL 34 - when the boost hits the front of the amp it goes from clean to full on fuzz. Overdrives pedals pretty well also. I had a Marshall DSL 40 and it drove that amps different channels well also.
