attention JB mag swappers:

anyone tried an A4 mag recently?

I have a new superstrat project in the works and I'm probably putting in my A2 JB (JB2) but I do have an A4 mag lying around . . .

just wanted to see if anyone had an a really negative experience with an A4 in a JB since it's a pain in the guy parts to keep taking off the pick guard to swap mags :)

I haven't tried an A4 in a JB, but I did try one in a Custom/59 hybrid and I wasn't crazy about it. But at the same time I could see that it could be a useful tone, it just wasn't one that I liked. It seemed to be very even, almost too even - lots of mids and pretty tight, but the high end sparkle wasn't there. I understand why some like the A4, but it's not for me. I think in the JB it would probably lessen the parts of it that I like and emphasize some aspects that I don't like - but again I haven't actually tried it. I felt like I learned enough about the A4 to know I'm not really a fan. I tend to like the A5 and A2 and even the A8 in some situations. I haven't tried an A3 yet.

I agree that A4's in some Duncans can be almost "too even." I like my mids so I'm usually an A2 fan, but A5 and A8 are great with some winds.

I guess the only reason I'm even considering it is to have a tighter low end that will make the JB a better pup for rhythm playing but I also want to keep the aggressiveness that it has with an A5. the A2 already accomplishes that to an extent by attenuating some of the lowest frequencies so I'm not eager to swap it out . . . just mulling over my options right now. I won't have the neck for about 3 weeks so I've got time to plan before I do the build.

Not a huge difference between A4 and A2, but A4 to my ear is a touch smoother and fatter.

might have to give it a try. I'll leave the A2 in there for a little while and then try the A4. I think boredom and curiosity are getting the better of me though :laugh2:

To me the A4 doesn't have any of that cool chewiness or sponginess that the A2 gives to the sound and feel. I didn't really find them similar at all.
