Ok so I see a lot of you guys post and say

"I don't use the middle pup, it's like a spice, or not good alone"

OR

"I don't use the bridge pup alone it's just bad, or too bright"

So the more I've thought about this the more it has bothered me. So do you guys just use the neck single alone, and then the notch positions?

I use them all, that's something I found out with glee about my strat, every position is very useable.

Nope.
I'm converting my Strat to a super strat tonight - single bridge HB, no volume control (just a kill switch).

Never used notched settings, either.

i use the neck pup 60% of the time but i do use all the positions. i set the middle pup the lowest so its always the cleanest and a little brighter

I use the notch neck+mid mostly (about 70 %) then the other notch, then the others.
But i do use em all. Then i have a split. So i combine that too on a push pull

I use all the positions at one time or another. Throw in the blend pot, and there's all kinds of crazy tones falling out of my strat.

I use every position, w/ the blender pot as well. Used to be that I only used the neck or middle position (and their respective notch positions), but never the bridge pickup alone, then I got my SD Custom Shop Texas Hot Hot with baseplate, now I used that position an awful lot. I recomend that everyone get this pickup and use it in the bridge position.

fftopic: Cool, ive been thinking about doing this with a warmoth strat ive got planned. The idea of a single kill switch really appeals me, as im either full on, when im playing, or full off, to stop feeback when im just singing and not playing. Let us know how it turns out.

I typically just use the neck and notch positions with Standard or Vintage like strat pickups.

I always used the middle pup on my strats..by itself, under gain mostly. About the only time I used #s 2 & 4 is for clean sounds w/ chorus...or a Sweet Home Alabama type thing.

I like every pup on a strat. Even for metal, the bridge pup WILL work..jes gotta play with your EQ and tone control. Check out Gary Moore Circa 1981-83, and tell me his tone doesn't absolutely kill.. vintage strats...DS1/TS9 goosed Marshalls. Incredible pinch harmonics, palm mutes, screaming leads and great sustain. Strats will do anything IF you can play the damn things. They are just too "labor intensive" for me.

it depends what the occasion calls for - usually 2 and 4 positions for clean playing, and 1 and 5 for distortion (occasionally 3).

I mostly use the neck pickup on my strat but I use all the positions it one has a unique sound.

I use them all, and have the uncanny ability to sound dreadful with them all!! Or perhaps that's just me!!

The neck position is 'home' to me. I use the bridge position a lot as well. I occasionally use the middle position, though less than I used to, as my current strat doesn't have as strong a middle position tone as my old 62ri had.

I barely ever use the notch positions. Perhaps it was growing up in the 80s and hearing that tone too much (esp in conjunction with a chorused rockman), but I find those tones a little overplayed. If I want a glassier tone, I'll go for the middle position on a two pickup guitar like my tele or PRS.

i use them all, i can go through 4 out of the 5 in a song hehe

only one i can't really get used to is pos. 2 - but it's a lil '59 and a RW/RP 5-2 combined, so it's not exactly a good match..

and i love the middle pup by itself - it seems to be the last pickup in a strat you upgrade, but i do love the 5-2

For the first gripe... if you dont like it dont use it! or just get a really toneful pickup for a good sound that compromises if you cant decide between a neck or a bridge tone for that song...

For the second... if you dont like the brightness, just get a fatter-sounding single (like beandips :laugh2: ) or wire the 2nd tone control for the bridge pickup, like I did. I find more useable tones out of the bridge pickup when i play with the tone control.
