Auto-tune software?

Hey guys

I'm after a decent auto-tune program for use on ProTools on MAudio hardware - running on PC. Just to clean up vocal tracks as a final pass-through...

Any recommendations? What are the options out there...?

Thanks!

Re: Auto-tune software?

I bought Antares Auto-Tune 4 a few months ago. It looks lyke an amazing tool. I haven't really had the time to get into it much, but I hope to start investigating it's possibilities soon.

Re: Auto-tune software?

Melodyne and autotune are the 2 most common options.

Antares is the Godzilla of autotuners.... somethimes I think it should be banned because of it´s power, like some kind of music WMD.... :D

A quick fact involving the power of Antares, however melodyne is supposed to be even more powerful. A producer I know who has big connections to mid/major labels in Nashville tuned a girl to a record deal. Seriously she couldn't sing worth a crap in the studio she could only sing live for some reason. He spent some 2 days just tuning vocals and a label picked her up because of the production he did.

It definitely can be over-used, but it's a pretty good tool for that last little bit of polish.

This is why these products should be banned and the music industry is sucking ass. Her producer should get a grammy for miracle working. There is no way she should get a deal. Unfortunately it happens everyday which way we get what we get.

Re: Auto-tune software?

What's more important, being good at singing live, or good at singing in the studio (if there is going to be a difference one way or another)?

Normally we seem to condemn people for not being able to back up their recordings in a live context...

Why can't she sing in the studio? Why can't she overcome this problem herself?

I've thought about picking up Antares, but I am afraid I'd use it as a crutch rather than actually working on my vocal ability.

I can't really answer any specifics here but lots of singers have "red light syndrome" where they just can't pull it off in the studio. Maybe they are more comfortable being able to just belt it out on stage? I dunno.

Yes I'm a cynic and no I haven't seen this person perform obviously but my experience with these types is that they really aren't that good live either. They work a crowd well and are very popular because they entertain but as vocalists, leave something to be desired.

In terms of what Autotune can do it is amazing but I feel it is also a bog part of whats wrong with the indiustry

Re: Auto-tune software?

I think it's a useful tool.

But it does normally compensate for the fact that pop / rock singers are often not quite as in-control as their opera singing cousins.

However I'm not against it per se. I've only ever seen it used as a final smooth out on well-sung vocal tracks.
