AutoWah(s)

Re: AutoWah(s)

Can someone please explain how these things work. Are they mostly a time-based effect. I've seen Guthrie G using a Guyatone WR3 Wah, which is a very dynamic pedal meaning that it reacts to the pick attack with wah sweep

Another word for these guys is envelope filter. What is basically does is this: You have an envelope shape, like in a wah pedal (a nice resonant peak). Now what happens next is that instead of your foor controlling the wah now your volume controls the wah. So the louder you play the more 'toe down' you go. In most of these pedals they incorporate some controle like sensitivity and decay. This allows you to control at what volume the wah goes 'toe down' and how long it takes to get back to 'heel down'.

How this is done in (very basic) circuit terms is often that the voltage put out by your guitar controls how this filter reacts. So your input signal level is controlling the way the rest of the 'wah-like' part of the circuit works. Is has nothing to do with delay or anything digital. It's just basic opamps and transistors, caps and resistors, not much more.

BTW doesn't this thread belong in the amp/pedal section?

Re: AutoWah(s)

Thanks man, yes that makes lot of sense. If it was totally time based I don't think it would have made much difference than maybe a phaser. But I've heard some auto whas behaving more or so like as if they are time-based

Sorry, ignorance on my part...

The Funky Monkey and the Snow White vids make a point of mentioning that their pedals ARE NOT envelope filters, my guess is due to the adjustable rhythm that controls how fast the wah "opens and closes"/"rocks back-and-forth."

My local music store has an Ibanez AW7, but it doesn't seem as good as other cracks at the effect from other brands.

I guess there are some technical details to how you can make a pedal sound like an automatic wah. The guys from the funky monkey and snow white did it in a technically different way, also making it sound a little bit different, but both the envelope filters and other clever ways (like with a LFO) to create the dynamics or volume depended reponse give a comparable sound in the end, which in general the best name is auto-wah. Also see this wikipedia page ;).

Re: AutoWah(s)

The best deal on the used market, IMO, is the DOD FX25B. These can be found for under $50 all day long and are great examples of this type of pedal. I regularly use the Boss T-Wah, which is my favorite.

Re: AutoWah(s)

I built one based on the Mad Professor Autowah. Cost is about 40 dollars. It's pretty frickin' sweet, very adjustable with many nice sounding settings.

Where do you get materials to build pedals anyway?
I might have to try something like that in the future...:33:

Quote from autowah wiki:
"There is a variant of auto-wah that utilises a low frequency oscillator (LFO) instead of an envelope follower to alter the effect. The filter response varies constantly with time and is not linked to playing dynamics."

It seems like a fine-line difference between classifications considering what you pointed out about the ultimate end result.
Seems more confusing than it needs to be...if I understand what I just read:boggled:

I checked out a video demo of the pedal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcLGnmaTUQE
It is the one Flea uses, but I couldn't help but be reminded of Les Claypool when hearing it.
Older pedals seem to have more of the "it" factor compared to modern ones, I might be swayed into getting the DOD.

Good Post, Good Post, Top-Drawer!
