Avatar Cabinet VS. Mesa Cabinet

What's the difference (given that they are both loaded with V30 speakers)?

I'm looking for Petrucci's sound. I know that he uses a Mesa cabinet, but it costs more money.

I have a 7 string and a TriAxis. I figured that I'd get the simulclass 2:90 in the future.

Thanks!

The Mesa will be darker, more shrill, and a tad muddier, IMO.

They sound good recorded, bu that's about it.

What poweramp are you running?

Re: Avatar Cabinet VS. Mesa Cabinet

I do mostly direct recording and have no power amp right now. I'm saving up to get a simulclass 2:90 and a 4x12 cabinet. :burnout:

Ah ok. I'd personally go with a Marshall, Rivera, Randall, or Bogner 4x12, and load it with V30's if it doesn't already have them.

I have a buddy who has a avatar 4X12 with two V30s and two G12H30s. It really brightens up the tone of his mesa boogie. I think four V30s will sound a bit dark, but then i dont know what tone you are really looking for

Thanks for the replies!

I am definitely looking for Petrucci's tone, especially in Liquid Tension Experiment - "Another Dimension." Check out the last 50 seconds of the song if you have it. Nevertheless, the tone is still Petrucci's in general--punchy (not too punchy) bass, full of low-mid to mid frequency and tight treble (no shrill).

My pickups on my 7 string are Air Norton7 and Blaze Custom (middy pickup).

By the way, I read that the modern switch in 2:90 would make the TriAxis sound tighter. Can anyone verify this?

Would a 4x12 of V30 be really too dark?

On another note, I read good reviews about Behringer cabinets with Jensen speakers. Any idea?

Thanks!

Re: Avatar Cabinet VS. Mesa Cabinet

Yeah, the modern mode tightens things up nicely.

I assume you read good things about the behringer cabinets on the SS.org forums? I personally hate them.

V30 cabinets aren't too dark at all! In fact, many find them shrill... I find them perfect ;).

Re: Avatar Cabinet VS. Mesa Cabinet

I actually read about Behringer cabs from HC reviews.

4 vintage 30's should not sound too dark at all! that's the one thing i dislike about the V30's... they're too bright for me.
