Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

Lately I've been really looking into 4x12 cabs. I've been using my Ear Candy Buzzbomb 2x12 with Eminence Governor and Wizard for maybe 6 years now. It sounds great to me, but I'm also digging the sound of my other guitarist's 4x12. We have the same 6505+ heads. Anyway, he plays through a B-52 cab and my thoughts are I could do better with a more quality cab and better speakers. I'm looking for something compact with clarity and good projection. So what are your thoughts on Avatar cabs? I'm between the contemporary and the signature 4x12 with either Eminence Private Jacks or V30s. I play technical death/melodically dark metal. I don't use a lot of gain and am looking for a tight, yet huge, crisp sound is preferred.

You honestly can't go wrong with Avatar. Great cabs for a great price. Now I can't comment on the 412s but I've owned 112s and 212s from them. No complaints.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

+1 on Avatar cabs, own some 2x10s!

While my personal preference is the Emi PJ, I think you may be happier with V30s, given your description of your music. Avatar has the Hellatone 60s, too, which are a gently broken in and rebranded V30.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

Also keep in mind, Avatar sells Chinese V30s now....... The rest of their speakers are UK made, don't know why the V30s went cheap.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

I have a buzzbomb and a cab 'like' a contemporary avatar... Modeled after an orange cab. It BLOWS away my buzzbomb. I have celestion greenbacks and splawn big blocks in my 4x12. I can do tuned to B death metal... Just gotta watch the low end. I go for a Stuck Mojo grind lol.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

Cool. Why should I avoid private jacks? I would like to keep the cab on the lighter weight side since they only have 34 ounce magnets. Otherwise I would go Gov/Wizard mix or K100.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

I have an avatar cab and it sounds big, 412. Great construction and very durable. My only complaint is they used cheap input jacks on mine and both of them had to be changed because they were rattling and couldn't be tightened.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

keep in mind the weight of this 412 and whether you will *always* get help from someone to move it

no need to risk a back injury! consider a lightweight 212 and neodymium speakers

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

I have a 2x12. It's about 65 lbs. I can lift it with ease. Maybe I should just Arnold up and go with big magnets in this 4x12 lol, Gov/Wiz in an x pattern! Might come to 130 lbs

OP plays modernish metal, so likely isnt all that old... Also, nothing to indicate thar he might be a she... For a young guy, a 412 is hardly heavy enough to injure (unless you drop it on yourself somehow)

After all, most 412s weigh no more than the tiniest, thinnest of girls. And no one ever says "duuude, avoid chicks - no need to risk a back injury!"

Hardly, the biggest speakers for guitar weigh twelve-ish pounds... 2/3 - 3/4 the weight of a cab is wood/mdf. And 412s arent using twice as much of that.

Also, unless dead set against used, check out whats offerred locally. You can typically save 50-70% off sticker price, and if planning a speaker reload, as much as 90% off what you would have spent.

For reference, btw, just about any cab with the same speakers will destroy your buddys B52, and doubly so with speakers that are a good fit to your music.... Btw, for REALLY dark and articulate with 6505+, I'd recommend g12-65's (just dont pay sticker for em, 650 bucks of speakers into a newly bought cab HURTS - look up used Marshall JCM 800 cabs, some of them had 65s and can be had for 350ish - just note that its SOME not all of em, so check before you buy). For beaucoup bite, try a V30/cl80 pairing or xpattern (or v30/mc90, the mesa variation)

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

When you add in the 105 pounds of the average human upper torso, you see that lifting a ten pound object actually puts 1,150 pounds of pressure on the lower back. In my line of work I have seen A TON of serious low back injuries. I lift correctly and use a back brace when lifting this bulky item. More than one million workers suffer back injuries account annually, and these account for one in five workplace injuries (Bureau of Labor Statistics). 80% of these injuries are to the low back (lumbar spine). Back injuries cost the US economy billions of dollars each year. I am glad I do not have one, I would settle for a little less or more tone with neodymium speakers; I just want to avoid getting any back injury ;)

MINIMIZING RISKS is why I want speakers that weigh 15 pounds less

Yeah yeah....and when a chubby lady jumps on your...wraps her limbs around your torso...and grinds up and down on your...? :naughty:

...the american south wouldnt have a single man left standing if even JUST two hundred pounds was likely to break ya. And hey, cabs weigh half that AND dont usually tend to thrust n wiggle.

Btw, ever pushed a sedan out of a four foot ditch with just one other dude helping? Puts nonsense like a hundred pounds lifted into perspectove real fast. And, btw, 100 lbs lifting is more likely to bugger up your wrists than your back anyway

Humans are surprisingly durable. And plenty of regular actions like diving a mere few feet, jumping, etc., create scary looking numbers of force that dont actually mean much.

Re: Avatar contemporary 4x12 questions

you only get one spine!

logic and science...

OSHA website states " maximum lower back compression force of 770 lbs. " https://www.osha.gov/dts/osta/otm/otm_vii/otm_vii_1.html

Back pain will eventually effect nearly everyone at one time. In 1998 the healthcare cost for lower back pain was estimated to be around 26.3 billion dollars. It is now thought that as a nation, we spend at least 50 billion dollars for lower back pain.

Another reason why a lot of us suffer with lower back pain is because of our lack of physical activity. Many of our jobs require us to sit and sit and …. sit, in front of a computer. This sitting is continuously putting a static load on our back, while at the same time promoting weak and faulty muscles that are meant to support and protect the back.

When the muscles in the lower back become weak and faulty, people tend to curve their back when bending over. The bowing out of the back makes it so that the muscles can no longer provide sufficient protection to the lower back.

lifting 55 pounds at a distance of 22 inches from your shoulder = 550 pounds of pressure on your back
