b.c. rich and a lil thrash

i recently bought a B.C. Rich iron bird with a single hum. and a single vol. knob alder body , maple neck, and rosewood fretboard. i'm thinking it will make a good thrash metal/metal core axe. so i decided to upgrade it w/ a s.d. screamin demon and some D.R. DimeBag Darrell high voltage 9.50's. i just want some second thoughts.

What amp are you using? Pedals? Are you trying to sound like Slayer, Lamb of God, Converge, Atreyu? Throw us a bone budday!

and welcome to the forum bro.

i'm using a mesa boogie double rectifier on it's own dist. i play a wide variety, some melodic stuff, some really heavy stuff too

This kind of the wrong forum, this mainly regards pickups and should be in the Pickup Lounge.

Anywho, from what I understand the Screamin' Deamond isn't that hot of a pup but allows for more articulation of the guitar's natural tone to come through. Are you looking for more articulation or punch/fullness? I'm not an expert on SD pickups but from what I understand the Screamer isn't the best pup for metal, although it does it well.

Like someone said before, the Duncan Distortion is good and you may want to look at the Dimarzio Super Distortion. The JB is also a pretty good metal pickup.

Just my two cents though.

Ugh... I hate my Invader.

EMG 85.

Re: b.c. rich and a lil thrash

If I had a Recto i think i'd use a medium- or low-output pickup and really make the amp work...high-output pickups are only necessary for driving amps that couldn't normally do super hi-gain.

Try a Seth Lover or a 59, or maybe one of the Customs if you want something hotter.

For what it's worth, i really like my Custom Custom in a Strat made of the same woods as your Rich.

Of course, all the 'cool' kids in the thrash/metalcore scene use EMG81's.

The cooler ones use 85's ;).

That whole bull**** about lower output pickups working better with higher output amps... All it's going to do is make you raise your gain. Then end result will be muddier, slushier, buzzier, fuzzier, and more noisy.

Re: b.c. rich and a lil thrash

Distortions are the bomb. I had 81s in a Les Paul Custom and my 2 ESPs. They sounded good but a little too shrill. Had JBs in my american Riches and they were too muddy. Tried a Custom and it was way better than either of those. Then I tried a Distortion. Yay. I'm happy.

That's exactly what I'd describe as happening when using high output pickups and a high gain amp... you won't have to turn your gain up THAT much due to pickup output, and in most case the gain being a touch lower will help your tone tighten up anyways.
