Re: B K butler tube drive pedal

I don't have the Tube Driver but I do have the BK butler Real Tube pedal which is, I believe, the predecessor of the Tube Driver and it sounds excellent. I also have 2 BK Butler Blue Tube pedals that I also love.

Re: B K butler tube drive pedal

I've had both the Tube Driver and Real Tube, and they only sound somewhat similar. The Real Tube is more of a distortion than an overdrive and has a much harder edge to the tone. It's very gainy, bright, and aggressive and IMO it sounds pretty similar to an early MIJ Boss DS-1. The Tube Driver OTOH is more of an OD / boost than a distortion pedal. Honestly unless you're into a fuzzy, saturated lead tone like Eric Johnson there are better OD pedals out there.

hi distrust,
what other od pedals do you rate over the bk butler pedal ????

Re: B K butler tube drive pedal

I have the Chandler Tube Driver rack, I would never part with it. It was the reason I was able to get a great Marshall sound out of my JC 120 and Silverface. For a while I used it as a preamp with a JBL power amp and 8x12 it was amazing.

Re: B K butler tube drive pedal

One trick to the Real Tube 901 is using a lower gain tube in the pedal. I use a very low gain 12AU7, rather than the factory 12AX7. Gives it more range, less fizz, and a little sweeter and more organic tone.

It really depends on what tone you're chasing. I use a Maxon OD-9 with my Marshall and it works for me, but not everyone likes a tube screamer. I didn't try lower gain tubes like Bill suggested which sounds like a good option if you have or are using a Real Tube. Other than that, I'm sure there are lots of forum bros who know overdrive pedals much better than I do.
