Babycaster Thread I: Design Choices

Re: Babycaster Thread I: Design Choices

Awesome Project! (the guitar & the son).....

+1 for Daphne Blue (nostalgic is always good whether cars, bikes or gits)...plus its close to "baby" blue....

+1 for the QP in the bridge ...I can't imagine anything sounding fatter yet still be tele-esque.....

(take my two cents w/ a grain of salt tho, I'm more of a "Tele-Enthusiast" than a confirmed, dyed-in-the-wool "Tele-Guy" like alot of our other esteemed forumites)

Re: Babycaster Thread I: Design Choices

I have no opinion on the electronics/controls and all that.

I will say that a natural finish screams heirloom. Being able to clearly see the wood just gives it a look of something special, crafted, and meant to be taken seriously. Daphne blue is cool but trendy therefore temporary.

I am no Tele purist myself

I am thinking pretty hard about that Quarter Pounder now.

Also in the running: Hot Stack and Little '59. Yeah, I am actually considering a Little '59. I like fat bridge pickups. I think the P90 in my PRS is too thin...

Fine points!

Once I get the body, I have a feeling the grain of the wood will tell me if it wants to be finished opaque or transparent.

Annnnnd quoted for Page 2, as this was the last post on Page 1 --- we'll all know shortly what I came up with for the body!

Just faxed my order to USACG

Waiting now to see if they can do what I want to do...

Re: Babycaster Thread I: Design Choices

I haven't heard back from USACG yet.

Has anybody submitted a custom body or neck form to them? If so, how long did it take for them to get back to you with a quote?

Re: Babycaster Thread I: Design Choices

when i asked them about a custom neck, it only took them 1 business day to return their "sorry, we can't do that" email ... i hope they take their time and give you a nice big ol' "yes, we can do that"

I am partly expecting a "no, we can't do that."

Since I'm no good at mystique, here is the custom body order form I sent them:

Body: 51-STP
Top Rout
Swamp Ash
N-M-B rout: Swimming Pool - Swimming Pool - T Bridge
T "Hot Dog" Control Layout
Bridge: Vintage T
Jack 7/8" Side

Comments:
Neck and middle pickup rout will be one big swimming pool.

I plan to use a pickguard that is not the (51 P-Bass style) 51-STP
standard pickguard, but rather a pickguard that is more similar to a
Telecaster pickguard, with a humbucker in the neck position and a
Strat-sized single-coil in the middle position; both suspended from the
pickguard - so the neck + middle swimming pool rout is very important to
me.

I would like the body to be routed for a standard Telecaster "hot dog"
style control plate, not the (51 P-Bass style) 51-STP control plate.

I would like a a rib contour / "tummy-cut" on the body.

Let me know how feasible / costly these requests will be --- thanks!!!

Stupid question...

If you're distilling your favorites, why are you asking for our opinions?

Re: Babycaster Thread I: Design Choices

i got the over on a 'yes' - that really doesnt sound too non standard

i was asking for a non standard neck heel (to fit a non standard neck pocket)

best of luck

While I know what I like, I am still basically unfamiliar with the details and measurements involved with guitars, like neck radius.

Since this is my first build, I am hoping to get the experience of others to feed into the specs of this project, since I feel like I know what I want, but I'm not exactly sure how to quantify it and capture it for an email to send to a builder.

yeah its hard to go sample necks objectively... i measured some of my necks, and i was surprised at how sensitive my hands are.

plus there are enough variables, like radius, width, and i guess depth; that its hard...
