Back to Jazz III's

I was at a gig Sunday and have been using Dunlop Jazztone 205's, actually a tad smaller than Jazz III's and very rigid. I probably wasn't warmed up properly but had to switch to Nylon Jazz III's and everything went great. I've been playing the Ultex material for quite some time but it's weird it seems like my warm up time is less with the traditional Jazz III's. Anyone had similar experience?

Re: Back to Jazz III's

For a long time I preferred Jazz Is, as pictured below; seemed to allow a more fluid glide over the string, with a more positive 'hit' and a darker tone.

I went back to Jazz IIIs when my picking technique became a bit better, because I think the point allows greater dynamic control. That's when I found a few of these:

Still blunt/thick picks intrigue me, so I want to try a few of these:

Those carbon jazz III picks are my favorite.

Mine too!! LOVE EM!! Went from Orange Tortex's to red jazz IIIs, then to the Eric Johnson ones, then I found the carbon ones... Game over.. Unfortunately, the only place I can find em is at Sweetwater.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

Carbon max-grips for me 95% of the time.

Strum-crazy clean sessions demand a forgiving red .5 dunlop tortex and I round-off the tip a bit extra even though it's already very rounded compared to the jazz3. And it also shortens it enough to not annoy me so much.

I love the 205 picks for warming up a bright guitar/amp/both. I still prefer the Jazz lll. I like the regular black and red ones for outstanding articulation, but the yellow Ultex ones are a step up. They have all the articulation, but with a slightly warmer tone and a little more solid feel, to me. I could see why your warm ups are shorter with the regular ones. They're slickest of all of them on the strings, IMO.

My favorite pick of all right now is the Ultex Jazz lll 2.0. Everything good about the other three, in a thicker pick.

Huge lover of those carbon jazz 3 picks, they make me a better player for sure.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

Guitfiddle knows what's up. I gave one of those to a friend at school and he bought 2 24 count bags of them.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I had a similar experience a couple months ago. For some reason I had put down the Jazz III (Max Grip Stiffo version) for a regular shape max grip .73 and after a week or so I felt like I just wasn't playing right so I picked up one of my Jazz IIIs and it was all there.

For christmas I got some Winspear picks as a gift, and while not something I would have ordered before I've been pretty impressed with his version of a Jazz III. They are made from engineering grade plastics in the UK by a single guy. I wouldn't have ordered them myself because they sound really thick by the sizes, but they are tapered and actually feel great in the hand because of it and also they cost about the same as a bag of regular picks and I'm a cheap guy, but I'm pretty sold now. I just hope I don't drop and lose it haha.

size/shape comparison for those interested here

Re: Back to Jazz III's

i used to like Jazz III for feel, but was always annoyed by the plucking sound thick picks cause. i''ve now settled on standard pearl firestone at 0,7/0,8 gauge. They're very silent and soft, but thick and stiff enough to give good feel. They do use up very fast though.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I've been a user of Jazz III for years.
Now I'm using Planet Waves Black Ice 1.5 mm picks.

Just a bit larger than Jazz IIIs, less slippery and I just like them better. Wonderful little things.

Can you link those?

Re: Back to Jazz III's

How the hell do you guys strum with these tiny picks? I've been getting into economy picking and my standard shaped tortex are feeling HUGE for that task, but I'm afraid I won't be able to bash chords with these small picks without losing them.

I don't strum much haha.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

Love the carbon grips here as well. A friend of mine has InTune make him some that were the jazz III shape but a little harder and more tortex-type material and a little sharper, those were great as well...just wore down way too fast for me

I think it just requires a bit of give/flexibility in your fingers, and the right grip and angle. It doesn't sound quite the same as strumming with a floppy noodle pick that naturally compresses/evens out the sound, but with practice it's doable. I again advocate that it's a bit easier to strum with a more blunt small pick, and then work up to a pointy Jazz iii; glides through the strings with more ease.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I use the Black Ice ones, or the Tortex Jazz III, 1.14mm. I don't like the feel of the regular plastic/nylon versions.
