Back to Jazz III's

Re: Back to Jazz III's

How the hell do you guys strum with these tiny picks? I've been getting into economy picking and my standard shaped tortex are feeling HUGE for that task, but I'm afraid I won't be able to bash chords with these small picks without losing them.

You get used to it. Although for acoustic and bass I use regular sized Tortexes. I've actually seen guys use a full sized tortes for rhythm and a jazz iii for soloing.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I've been a user of Jazz III for years.
Now I'm using Planet Waves Black Ice 1.5 mm picks.

Just a bit larger than Jazz IIIs, less slippery and I just like them better. Wonderful little things.

Interesting....I tried Jazz III reds, and thought they were a bit too small.

My standard for at least 15+ years has been the Tortex blue 1.14, although maybe I'll check out Black Ice for the hell of it...

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I am using only jazz III XL's now for about 3 years. i am still getting used to them. sometimes i find i am picking too hard. but i also changed to lighter string gauge so it might be that.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

You get used to them for rhythm stuff. With that said I always have a few tortex's around for when I'm doing something like funk for example, where you want that 'pick click' the thinner, bigger picks give you.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

It is a technique thing. I strum as easy with the smaller pick as I used to with a larger one. Now a larger one feels like I am strumming with a Dorito.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I've been using the Dunlop black jazz lll for a long time now. Ive gotten so used to the tiny picks that it feels odd to use a normal sized one. Then again I'm a woman with smaller hands so that could have something to do with it .

Re: Back to Jazz III's

For me smaller picks force better technique (among other good qualities they have.) They force the way you grip somewhat, and cause your fingers to be closer to the tip rather than flapping the pick around fly-swatter style.

When I first switched to the stiffer jazziiis from the Tortex's. I had the problem of strumming too hard, etc for the first few days. adjusted fairly quickly... The difference in accuracy is well worth it!!

Re: Back to Jazz III's

Just wanted to say that I use Jazz III reds for everything: electric, acoustic, bass, etc. I have used them for so long that I am a mess with a normal pick. Like Mincer said, a normal pick feels like a giant Dorito.

Re: Back to Jazz III's

I used to play with Doritos, but I had to use light strings or they would crumble and I got tired of wiping cheese dust off of my guitar... :18:

Out of curiosity, i bought some Vpicks and Gravity picks, just to experiment and make sure Im using the best pic for me. (at one time I thought the orange Tortex's were til I went JIII) I got one of the 1984s and yeah, that one feels like playing with a Dorito.. Good one Mincer!! We are getting some mileage on that one!! haha
Of those pics tho, the ones that I enjoy the most, are the ones sized and shaped like the JIII. So sticking with the JIII
