backplate on the peavey 6505 212 combo amp ?

Hello,
I got my son a peavey 212 combo amp, and my question is on the back of the amp can I remove the upper plate that you would take off to change the tubes? seems to get alittle bit warmer than my tube heads get. I dont want to effect the sould, I just was hopeing this would let alittle air flow to keep things cooler.

I presume its just a grill of some sort?

If so yeah you can and it shouldnt affect the sound.
