Bad combo's

We always see the "good combo's" threads. I was wondering what some "bad" combo's would be. For example:

Fender Cyclone:

neck: SVR-1 Vintage Rails (2.31k)
bridge: PA-TB2 Distortion Trembucker (21.3k)

I wonder if the Distortion would boil the wax out of the Rails? :laugh2:

Re: Bad combo's

Not nearly as extreme as your example, but the Vintage Rails in the middle position of a fat strat is easily over-powered by a Screamin' Demon unless you split the Demon. The tone is very nice, the VR just needs to sing a little more loudly.

I think you could go through the list of pickups and spot obvious mismatches based on output, but what would be a more interesting debate would be to discuss pickups that appear to match very well on paper but lack true mojo when installed.

Thats one thread "hijack" I would support.

Much better than my idea. ;)

4 dimebuckers in a tele?

Maybe not a bad combo-but a bad idea :blackeye:

Screamin' Demon in a Les Paul ... simply does NOT work!!

So . . . I guess the LiveWire Heavy Metal's would be out. :laugh2:

Re: Bad combo's

Invader in a big chunk of mahogany with a mahogany neck, ebony fretboard, and pure nickel strings.

Mud, anyone?

Craig would think otherwise, Ben! :p
Actually, Brow agrees w/me (I think ... :) )
There's something about the balance of the pup that doesn't work with the LP. Ends up sounding very brittle. I know Brow will be swapping out his Demon, and a friend of mine here in NY just had a similar experience (tho, I had told him not to use the Demon).

Re: Bad combo's

The Duncan Custom (14.4K) used as a neck pickup and Custom Custom bridge (14.4K) came in my Hamer Monoco Super pro and Hamer still puts that set in that guitar.

I think the Custom as a neck pickup is a questionable choice and when played loudly a genuinely clean tone is almost impossible...plus it's kind of thick and wooly sounding when used as a neck pickup.

I replaced mine with a neck Seth Lover a couple of years ago and have been happy with the Seth/CC combo ever since!

Re: Bad combo's

I know I'll be stoned for saying this, but:

59/JB in my Lester. The only good sound I got out of this set was with flat out distortion from the bridge pickup.

I'm much happier with the Pearly Gates set in there. :)

Let the flaming begin. :burnout:

Re: Bad combo's

Neck: Full Shred
Bridge: Distortion

I have that in my schecter right now....the DD's output is overwhelming for the FS. I need an A2P bad....

Re: Bad combo's

This thread, that started somewhat as a joke, actually has some good info in it. (Thanks to Mike's suggestion.)

I know I've said a dozen times, but the pair of 59's that didn't work in my Patriot, has become my favorite set in the Predator. ;)

I'm surprised that Schecter006Elite's Full Shred/Distortion didn't work better. Thats a combo I was thinking about for awhile.
