I've got one of those Guitar Center 2016 Flying V Pro Ts in cherry red. Awesome looking guitar. I did not like the Gibson pickups in there. The 57 classic was OK in the neck, but the Burstbucker 3 was too trebly and thin in the V shape. I bet it would do better in a Les Paul. With 500K pots, the guitar certainly leans bright. I put in a set of uncovered Saturday Night Specials. I could live with them for sure, but in this guitar, they also feel like they're lacking some weight and push. They could use just a hair more than what they have. Enter the Abraxas. It's A4 as well but measures more towards 14K vs. 9.5K like the SNS. So, it seems like it could bring just a touch more weight but keep things leaning vintage. But...I read up on the Abraxas and I read conflicting reports about it being too round or dark. The SNS set fits pretty nicely treble wise.
I'm open to some other suggestions. I've tried a 59/Custom Hybrid in a Les Paul Traditional and thought it was a bit trebly in that so wouldn't want it in this V. Open to non SD pickups too. I did put in a Dimarzio Super Distortion on an HH Strat and that is a pretty cool and unique sound. This V has splits. If it split well and offered up a decent vintage tone in split mode, that would be a candidate as I know the SuperD is tried and true in a Flying V as well although I'd change the cap to .047 as that seems to fit it very well in my Strat.
