Bare Knuckle pickups

Re: Bare Knuckle pickups

I was gonna post a thread about Bare Knuckle...

I've checked out their website, www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk
They are handmade in England. They cost an arm and a leg, but I really want to try the Warpig and the Miracle Man. The Warpig looks #$&#$ awesome, with the distressed cover.

Re: Bare Knuckle pickups

They have great reviews on Harmony Central. I considered buying a Black Dog to pair with my new Kinman Woodstocks. However, when I asked them about phase issues with the Kinmans, they suggested that I buy their singlecoils instead of helping me with the problem (which Chris Kinman and Lindy Fralin both addressed for me). This turned me off and I ended up buying a Fralin PAF instead.

Also, there have been grumblings that the tremendously positive reviews, most by anonymous sources, are too good to be true.

Re: Bare Knuckle pickups

Thanks for bringing them to our attention. However, I have a feeling they've known about us -- or at they've least read our FAQ section pertaining to scatter winding.

Here's a quote from our FAQ section::

"When you scatter wind a pickup, you’re not placing the wire as close to itself on each layer as you would with a machine. The effect is to create more air space in the coil. This lowers the distributed capacitance... When the capacitance is lowered, the result is that more treble will come through and the resonant peak of the pickup will increase slightly."

Now, here's a quote from their "How We Make Them" section:

"When a coil is scatterwound, the wire isn't as close or even, layer on layer, as with a machine and this lowers the distributed capacitance that exists between the turns of the wire. Lower capacitance allows more top end through, the resonant peak increases slightly... "

Kind of reminds of how I used to write term papers in Junior High... I'll take it as a compliment. But I can't help wonder if I had written, "Seymour only scatter winds single coils because even the original Gibson P.A.F.s were machine-wound," if they would still be scatter winding their humbuckers. :smack:

Hmmm... Very interesting.

I just noticed that a lot of their definitions on the FAQ page are very close to an old Duncan catalog I have. For instance:

Bare Knuckle FAQ: Resonant Peak - This is the frequency that the impedance of a pickup is at its highest. A higher resonant peak usually indicates a brighter, more open sound within a certain type of pickup, i.e. humbuckers or single coils.

early/mid 90's Seymour Duncan catalog: Resonant Peak - The frequency at which the impedance of a pickup is at its highest. Within a given category of pickups, a higher resonant peak usually indicates a brighter, clearer sound.

Re: Bare Knuckle pickups

T.O. got an endorsement deal with them recently and Brow just bought a set of the pickups off of Ebay. Maybe they'll step in shortly.

If you wanna know the skinny from BK, go pop into their new forum. Tim Mills, the man behind BK, frequents the forum and will answer any questions you may have.

I have my first set of BK pups on their way and will post a review with my impressions when they're installed.
