Over the last 6 months I have been working on my Baritone project. Basically done other than some finishing touches..
- Warmoth Paduk/ebony neck on a Richard Saylor body (paduk/ash)
- JS Moore pickups with single volume knob, 3 pup selector for N, N/B, B and a single small selector to bring in the middle pup regardless of the 3 selector position. Beautiful sounding pickups (I also replaced a pup in my ALbert Lee with a JS Moore)
- I kept the neck unfinished but the body has shellac and then poly.
- the back is ash in black stain with shellac and then poly finish
- Armadillo bridge, neck plate, ferrules and jack. Now that I finished I would like to get their volume knob in brass too
- Gotoh locking tuners. I had sperzels but they gave me a lot of trouble so I switched - the Gotohs are awesome though I had to do a bit of filing on the 6 string to get the larger diameter string through
Comments:
a) Neck took a lot of work to get playable. I had to do a full fret levelling on it - it was basically unplayable when I got it. I still have to file the nut. The strings were super high (about 40 to 50 thou off the first fret).
b) Neck/body interface was "out" by a about 10mm. I had to trim back some of the paduk on the neck so that the holes on the neck and body would align. I did route out a small section so that I could access the truss rod without having to take off the neck.
c) Baritones are awesome to play. I had no idea that I would like it this much. I kinda of had the bug to build/assemble a guitar and I did not want to build a guitar similar to what I already have. The bari's have the wonderful deep tone with a really nice "piano" like sound - it kind of mesmerizes me when I play with a trem :0)
