baritone safe with guitar amps ?

I was curious if it was completely safe to use a Fender baritone special into a 1x12 Traynor YGL2 and Mesa Lonestar special 4x10 ... the 1x12 has a celestion vintage 30 and the Mesa has 2 jensens and 2 mesa speakers... I would be playing relatively loud with fuzz and dirt pedals.

I just wanted to be sure so I don't destroy anything.. this is my first baritone and I have just been using it with my 1976 Traynor YBA-2b 1x15 combo which is ok since it is technically a bass amp

thanks in advance!

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

I have not seen a Whole Bunch of low octave guitars (or is it a high octave bass.?)
But all have I seen on stage have been into a guitar amp.
A Fender 6 into a Twin Reverb is a fairly common sight.

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

ah ok don't the Fender 6s have thicker strings too ? I use a lot of fuzz and dirt so I'm not sure if that makes a difference

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

IMO, the only way you would hurt the amp(s), would be if you were really thumping the strings like a "normal" bass, and maybe the guitar speakers would not handle the Max Excursion..... if that is the right term,,,,,the max travel of the speakers when they move in and out.
I really do not think you will have a problem.
I am sure a quick email to Fender will get an answer that will squelch any of your doubts.

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

ok I'm just playing it like a guitar with a pick so I think it should be fine... thanks for the help zzmoore

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

I used to have a Schecter baritone and it sounded wunnerful through all the guitar amps I put it through.

SfD

What kind of music are you playing with that baritone?

Mostly stoner rock and heavier rock... basically a lot of fuzz or boosting of my amp going on.. I have not played it through the guitar amps yet but through my Traynor YBA-2b it sounds really nice but I know I would have more clarity and overall tightness with the YGL2 I have.

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

You're fine. People worry WAY too much about the whole "bass through a guitar amp" thing. As long as you're not running a bass head into a guitar cabinet, you'll be fine. I run basses into guitar amps/cabs and basses into guitar amps/bass cabs on a regular basis and have never had one issue with it.

thanks VK for sharing your experience with amps... I guess I will start using it into my guitar amps tomorrow. Have you done this at gig volume levels ? is it still safe at that volume? I'm probably worrying too much I just can't afford to be replacing anything right now...

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

There is no problem at all with baritones. I run mine into a cheesy 30watt no name korean made solid state amp and practice with a band 3 times a week. It runs literally on 10 to be heard been doing it since february and its still trucking along.

Gig volume if not louder. All of the grit in my recorded bass tones is from guitar amps into guitar cabs or guitar amps into bass cabs.

thanks VK for the help!... I tried the baritone into my Traynor YGL2 today and it sounded like a dirty heaven, I will get to rehearse tomorrow with it so we shall see how that goes.. thanks again!

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

I've mostly seen baritones going into guitar amps, but it's not unheard of for a baritone to be used through a bass amp, especially when you are using it as your bass such as Slash when he used a Bass VI on Use your Illusion.

Re: baritone safe with guitar amps ?

Personally, my number 2 is a Fender VI i built which I smash through a Laney VC 30 with a Weber Blue. Never ever, ever had any problems, even when going through guitar --> Orange Box -> Blue Box --> TS9 --> Tym Distortion --> Fuzz Munchking --> Amp.
