bass amp??? stupid question

Will playing a bass through a guitar amp damage the amp or speaker in some way, if played at moderate volumes?

Re: bass amp??? stupid question

Electric guitar speakers are not voiced to handle bass frequencies. You risk blowing the speaker.

This typically is not a concern on acoustic or keyboard amps, which are voiced for a broader frequency response.

Re: bass amp??? stupid question

a guitar amp is a designed for a a completely different frequency range, same goes for the speakers. Don't know if you could really damage anything but you're tone would be seriously lacking the growl you'd want from a bass. Also consider that bass notes need mor energy to be transported so the average wattage of guitar amps might be a little low(bass amps can go up to 1000w afaik)

Re: bass amp??? stupid question

I have a cheapo guitar amp and I've practiced my bass through it for a year now with out any ill effects.Of course this is a bedroom levels.

Re: bass amp??? stupid question

I've run bass through plenty of Guitar heads (most notably old marshalls like the plexi and superlead)

will it damage the head? I highly doubt it unless the head was gonna break anyways. now, as far as speakers are concerned, Modern speakers can take quite a bit of abuse and still keep going (i'm not talking kicking them, i'm talking sound frequencies) however playing bass though them will wear them out faster. For older speakers you'll be pushing your luck if you play at volume levels much higher than moderate (of course, that may be "don't break the vintage stuff" paranoia, but i don't wanna find out) End result is playing at moderate to quiet volumes should be fine.

I played a old, hand wired 72 Marshall Superlead through some Mesa Boogie Deisel Bass 4x10s for quite some time, and it sounded great when i cranked it loud as hell. I never had any problems with it other than normal regular tube maintnance.

If you're after the type of sound of a bass through a guitar rig, you could get a cab loaded with 12in. Bass speakers and basically not have a care in the world (it would get you pretty close). Alternativly, you could try using Mesa Recto cabs (or some other cab designed for that modern high-gain drop tuned sound)... all the kids nowadays drop tune their instruments so far that they might as well play bass, and those cabs can take it just fine... that may be a bit of a coin flip though on blowing them/wearing them out fast at high volumes, but at moderate volumes, I wouldn't worry about it too much at all.

Thanks for the info guys. I want to get a bass but it may take a while to scratch the cash together for amp as well, I'd rather get the best instrument I could afford and wait on the amp.

Re: bass amp??? stupid question

For loud volumes hook a bass cab upto your guitar amp and you'll be fine.

For lower volumes guitar speakers will generally hold up fine....at higher volumes you do risk wearing out the cone, which will make the speaker sound "dead" when you run a guitar through it....plus the risk of actually blowing a speaker.

If you play with a group that has a PA, you can get away with not having an amp. Plug in direct to the PA.

Yeah at this point I just want to use to improve my guitar technique more than anything and I've always liked bass. I doubt I'll be gigging with it.

As if most soundguys don't have enough problems with trying to get JUST vocals in to a monitor mix...

:laugh2:
