Original SRV is the one to go for, the newer issues are also good but seem (IMHO) to lack that massive punch that the original SRV has...


BTW- I now use SWR

Both of those amps are SS and SVT in name only...

Sure an original SVT is the ticket IF you have 2 grand for the amp another $1500 for a cab then figure another $600-800 for a tune up on a 35+ year old amp and then miniumu $1000 for new tubes all around however must of us aren't ready to plunk down that kind of true grit on a single bass amp...

If I were shopping bass amps today I'd be looking at SWR or GK more than likely...an RB400 or RB800 will go a LONG way for 98% of bass players.

so you think a mid 80s rb400 will be ok with a 2x10 and 1x15 cab to keep up with some guitar halfstacks like the peavey 6505 and xxx?i have a gk 15 inch cab and like it but of course the design of those arent always the best on their own

An RB400 with a 1x15 and a 2x10 should be plenty unless the guitar player just cranks WAY too loud. I have a buddy that uses an RB400 with a 1x15 and a 4x10 and keeps up with a drummer and sometimes as many as 3 guitar players plus vocals, harp and keys...and he has PLENTY of volume to spare!

is it the older first 400 rb or the newer higher wattage one?i had a guy wanting a gibson i have for the setup.but the guitarist does crank the amps and funnily enough he put one amp on each side of stage but he couldnt hear himself

If you after the SVT sound, then you might want to consider Ashdown amps. I have a MAG300H that I payed $225 used and it sounds killer. When I got it, the store also had a GK 400RB and the Ashdown was much warmer and "right" sounding to me.

its a thought id seen them as well but i was dealing on craigslist but im sure i can find one again it doesnt have to be ampeg 100% but since id seen a few it sounded good
