Bass pickup/wiring question/opinion?

I'll apologize in advance if this has been discussed before, but it's my first day, and between the day job and the Theatre gig, time to scour forums for past info isn't on the priority list.

Anyway...

As a 30th birthday present, my wife's letting me build a custom bass (which will be my seventh). I'm settling on a fretless 5'er, buying most of the parts from Warmoth (I live in Kalamazoo and have many luthier friends who are willing to help me build it). It's tentatively a mahogany body with maple neck/fingerboard in a Deluxe P Bass body.

Pickups, I was thinking of coupling a Jazz Neck (SJ5-70/74) pickup and a Music Man (SMB-5a) in the sweet spot. I'd like to keep the wiring and electronics as rudimentary as possible. I was wondering if I can get away with simply a volume knob, 3-way selector switch (just the J, just the MM, and both) and maybe a tone knob. I will be running it through a GK 700rb-II bass head and Aguilar GS112 cabinet. More often than not, I'm going to be doing fusion and studio work with the axe.

So, the question is; is the simple wiring okay for the Music Man pickup (I've never wired one of those)? Is there a better pickup config that you gents would recommend?

Re: Bass pickup/wiring question/opinion?

What is it about the MM pup that would complicate things? Is it active electronics?

Otherwise, I don't know why any complicated wiring would be necessary.

Re: Bass pickup/wiring question/opinion?

That's what I'm wondering, if the MM pup is strictly an active pickup. The products site wasn't that specific in mentioning it, only that it goes well with it's 3 and 4 band eq system.

Re: Bass pickup/wiring question/opinion?

I'm not really sure about this one. From a purely electronic point of view, wiring up two bass pups should be the same as two "normal" pups, but I don't know about the active part.

If Scott Miller doesn't see this, you may want to email or PM him directly.
