Bass Synths

I've always wanted a Akai Deep Impact to use as my bass synth, but those are discontinued. It had no business to be in rock music but it sounds so good. I haven't found any decent replacement for it, and ebay prices are above $1,000 for a used model. I just purchased the Digitech Bass Synth Wah, but that's more of a different sound. What types of synth's does everyone else use?

Re: Bass Synths

My POD HD 500. It's a really synthed out thing and sounds great. If you have one I'll send you my patch.

Re: Bass Synths

I get pseudo-synth sounds the weird and hard way with squareish wave fuzz, digital octave up or suboctave (sometimes fifth), and sometimes setting a wah to squash the sound just right and either keeping it there with my foot or moving it up and down for a filter effect. Occasionally I'll use phaser too just to swirl it around a bit.

I like it all to be able to used individually without midi presets while still being able to control the expression pedals. Obviously it's not the same thing though. I did have a lot of fun playing with the EXH bass microsynth though.

Yeah I blame Chris Wholenstomeworthsmenshire (Wolstenholme?)or however you spell his name, from Muse. So many otherwise unwanted pedals suddenly shot up in value because of all the stuff he used, from the Akai to the Russian Muffs, etc...

Wolstenholme's tone is massive though. And a lot of players make the mistake of thinking they can get his tone if they use his gear.

I think Bass tones are not as straight forward to achieve, and Chris's are complex as hell. That's my ultimate goal tho, never heard a better tone than Hysteria which is 4 bass layers: Russian muff then deep impart then animato (I'm using the hardwire cm2) and lastly clean.

I love the guy to death but lets be honest, it's mostly his gear. You're gonna get closer to his tone by playing with your own style through his set up rather than Chris himself playing through a P bass and the Crate practice amp in my room. The dude's rig is so ridiculously extensive it's not funny. If he takes his effects that seriously than anyone trying to emulate him probably should too. You don't need exactly that rig to get close though.

Agreed. He's using rare and expensive stuff, Marshall DBS amp, Pedulla and Stratus basses, Akai Deep Impact (which is a huge part of his sound), Human Gear Animato (big piece as well), Russian muff, and tons and tons of filters.

I'm trying to approximate with my fender bass and crate bass amp. The piece that's holding me back is the deep impact, there's no real replacement for that from my research

That's fair, but then having all the exact settings that he has? With a rig as extensive as his, it's gonna be hard to achieve.

Re: Bass Synths

I don't wanna even think about it....

Me neither. On my POD I use the Big Muff block the split the signal and send half through a wah that's mixed about 40% on the one side. A couple EQ's and I have something similar to how he sounds.

Having a Boss LS-2 is key for having his sound on a smaller rig. I run my fender bass into the ls2 which splits the signal into 2 effect loops. Effect loop #1 is a digitech hardwire cm-2 going into a russian big muff, Effect Loop #2 is a digitech bass synth wah going into a boss oc2 octave.

This guy on youtube, kaputsport, made 5 videos details Chris's setup. He uses many of the same pedals, basses, and the same amp as Chris. Give all 5 parts a watch if you have the time... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UofS3bfyFeU

Re: Bass Synths

I heard he uses the bass synth wah too. That thing is incredibly fun to mess around with.

yup, I just picked one up from ebay. Should mess around with it tonight or tomorrow. I found a few people using it to match Hysteria and Plug in Baby tones. And with the boss ls-2 I think I'll be satisfied. I'll report back if interested
