Hi there ~

If you're talking about the synth bass, it was Dave Henschell playing an ARP (Alan R Pearlman) Synthesiser - most probably an ARP 2600..

If you're talking about the bass guitar tone, then it was the late Dee Murray, playing a Fender Jazz Bass I believe. If someone better informed says it's a Precision, I wouldn't argue.

Funeral/Love Lies Bleeding - sublime!

jazz...interesting....i figured it was a fender...

but yea, i was talking about the bass guitar. the tone is just so, i dont know how to say it....like, its almost lik its compressed to all hell, but in a great way. there is no boom to it at all...almost like an acoustic...

This is my favorite classic rock song....ever. I've noticed that bass tone as well, to me it sounds kinda dirty and like you said unplugged, kinda sounds like you can hear the strings pop against the fretboard and resonate with the wood in a way many probably do not like. I think it's cool. Sorry I can't help determine what exactly Dee was using, I can only share my praise. I would like to know as well...

we use to cover those two tunes cus the rest of the guys were into it ... our keyboardist used it as his show off tour de force ... never did it for me

so...after some searching and asking my guitar teach (played with bob dylan at the time and hung out with dee on several occasions), i found out that its the attack used. it was a p-bass, but dee literally hit the strings with his hand (not really slapping) and he hit the sting into the pickup, which caused that dirty type sound because of the string hitting the magnet......
he then showed me how to do it...and it sounds pretty much like how the record sounds (diff obviously...but i got the idea)

the elton john version is distinctly better...imo

i agree, i was just commenting that was the first place i had heard it. usually the originals are better, though there are a few exceptions. (dancin in the street)
