Hello SD forums people. This could get messy.
I am planning to build a PJ parts bass. For the bridge I was looking at the NYC4 bridge that would give me the options of having the J in both the 60's and 70's positions. They don't have to be exact to the mm, so a NYC4 bridge would be perfect for this. I'd want to be able to use either one of the single coils, and why not have the option of series/parallel while I'm at it right? For example, the Ibanez Talman 300 has a similar setup but it only does one of the coils tapped, and has the HB option series only. AND lacks switching for the P in series/parallel.
I really like the Steve Harris P pickup. I don't really like the other SD P pickups.
If I go with the Harris P and the NYC4 bridge there's a huge difference in their DCR so I'm expecting to have a P that is way overpowering the J, especially if it's either single coil. I have a theory, if I go with a 250k vol pot on the P and a 500 on the J, VVT, then I can more finely tune the different pups' outputs to get more usable blends. I know that the pot values won't make louder or more/less output, but I think the J having more sweep overall from full to ground is going to give me the ability to work around this. I might be backwards or I might be totally wrong. That's a big part of why I came here.
Regarding the difference in output, I contacted SD and they can build me custom shop NYC4 with a5 instead of their standard a2. Generally what I want out of a J is as little scoop as possible, I know better than to expect none. What I want out of a P is basically already what the Harris P is, low/mid focused. He gets the brightness from the strings, and the Roto Harris strings are probably what I'd try on this bass first. Otherwise it would be essentially a stock J with a P and soapbar routs done to it.
So if I go with the SD custom shop, I don't know anything about winding, overwinding, potting, etc but I assume SD will do whatever I ask them to do if any of these factors in the design maybe you guys can tell me what to ask for. I agree with the SD rep that the SPB1 is a better match for the NYC4, however it's still a big difference in DCR so seems like the end result will still be VERY P little j. On a typical PJ setup, there's 3k up to maybe 5k difference in the DCR, they are all P heavy and I accept that. (I'm not using a blend knob) so on a bass with a blend that middle detent is still about 55-60% P sound even though the blend is in the middle. I accept all of this as the end result of my PJ here would be P heavy too but that's why I think VVT is a better way to fine tune it. And as well I'm going from the DCR on the product page which I don't know, but assume is reporting the ouput of the full pup, ie wired as HB.
So all this leads me to a second (but really just extension of the first) question;
I have a Schecter Damien 4 that has HB's set up as dual pole J's, similar to the NYC4's. They are not the right size for the triple shots rings, but I could cut off the switches and just mount that near the knobs. Is there a 'just the switch' part of the triple shots?
What I would really want is a pair of 4 way toggles, single coil/series/parallel/'other' single coil especially for the bridge, because again this idea came from a PJ with two J options. May as well do it for the neck too right?
