Basslines, middle pup touch buzz

Hi guys,
Fixing for a friend.
The charvel bass(USA) has(or at least looks like) pj standard setup as per SC diagram
Only difference to the image is the P pups are shifted. D,G strings are the front pup and the one that leads to earth, EA strings are the middle pup and leads to the vol.

The EA pup creates buzz if you touch the poles. (DG does not). Problem goes away if, with the other hand, you touch the ground(jack or knobs).
If I ground(copper tape and solder wire, back of pup) the EA poles the buzz is no more but DG drops output :( ???
More detail on this phenomenon. I earth the outer E pole, DG is fine. But as I move the earth on the EA poles towards DG it decreases the DG output. By the time Im on the 4th pole(outer A) closest to D its pretty much deafed the D output.

I don't have a history of this old bass so not sure if the problem has always been there. It certainly looks like its an aftermarket pup install. The bridge wire was isolated to the bridge(paint). I scraped this off and now at least the strings are earthed which reduces the problem as more often than not the player is touching the strings when he rests on the pup.

Is this normal?

I noted the pup magnets. EA is N up, DG is S up and Jazz is South.

The bass will come back to me in the next few days(they are currently recording) at which time I will have more time to investigate the wiring and such.
