Saw Wishbone Ash last night and the guitar player had two Bassman amps with a Les Paul and the tone was fantastic. He was also using a Plexitone pedal, a boss chorus, a fulltone clyde wah and something else I couldn't recognize. The other guitar player had a small Mesa Amp, probably a Mark IV, not sure, it did have the sliding EQ. The guy with the Mesa, Andy Powell, had a cool Flying V.

Haven't seen a guitar assualt like that in a long time. Heavy progressive 70's rock.

I want a Bassman now, make that two, and a Plexitone pedal and Les Paul and a Flying V and better chops. Those guys almost made me want to quit playing guitar, that's how good they were. Great drummer and bass player, too.

LOL, I know the feeling. I'm starting to unload the stuff I'm not using. I've gathered so much stuff over the years--and it's all great--that it's time to thin the old herd out.

Hey check this out (can you tell I'm scouring ebay tonight?) Did that guy's setup look like this? One is an extension cab though.

The Bassman LTD is a killer amp. I've had both a 90's reissue and the LTD, and the LTD is much nicer, due to the Jensens speakers, GT tubes, adjustable bias, and the circuit board is very simple with good components. Besides the circuit board, most of it is flying leads connecting everything. I can imagine that the Plexitone would be a good OD pedal for it, since it lends more Marshall-like tone to the American design.

I haven't owned a LTD but I have wanted one
The bassman LTD sounds better than all the newer Bassmans
It also takes pedals well and has a gorgeous top end, rather than Fender ice pick

Wishbone Ash? Was the other guitarist Luther Grosvenor? (perhaps better known as "Ariel Bender" from Mott the Hoople)

I looked at the CD I bought at the show, his name is Muddy Manninen. Cool name for rock. He from Finland and was in a band called Gringos Locos before Wishbone Ash.

It looked exactly like that. Very sweet. Oh man I wish I could crank something like that. For home playing I'm using my Valvetronix at night and during the day I play a Reverend Goblin at about half volume on the five watt setting. Kinda gets in the ballpark. It'll do some tweed like tone and I'm hoping the plexitone will get me there without breaking my lease.

Andy Powell using Mesa's?!

The last time I looked into his gear he was ranting and raving about how much he loved his Marshall Plexi heads.

Apparently, the secret to good tone from a Plexi (according to Andy powell) is to run it with the amps volume set to 1 :D

It should do the trick. It's an extaordinary pedal IMHO.

They didn't have the Plexitone pedal at GC, but I got to try a beat up looking Bassman (probably a reissue) with a 1960 re-issue Les Paul on about four in a back room and it cranks. Great match for a Les Paul, but I wish I had that plexitone pedal, cause just straight into the amp it just didn't grind the way EL-84 amps like the Gibson Goldtone 2x12 or a Crate Vintage club, which give me more grind (for my style anyway), and I like reverb, too.

Almost bought the Seymour Duncan twin pedal, but then logic took over and I said wait a minute, if I'm looking for Plexi tone, why would I buy something designed for Twin Tone. :smack:

The SD pedal is called the Twin Tube Classic because it has 2 tubes..........nothing to do with a Fender Twin tone.

especially the new ones with the mullard & GE tubes

Set on four, you're not gonna get any grind. CRANK IT UP! Mine sounds outstanding cranked, but it's just too loud for the house and recording in the house. It is so FULL though at low volumes, that a good tube pedal like the SFX-03 or Vox Bulldog should sound outstanding.

I don't know, that Bassman was crankin on 4 with the Les Paul. Was sitting two feet from it and I didn't want to go louder than that. I used some of the suggested settings, cause I'm not too familar with bassmans. And it was a great tone, just would need a pedal at that volume, to get the grind I want.

Thanks Gearjoneser, I really thought the Seymour Duncan Twintone pedal was to get Fender Twin tone, so I didn't even try it :smack: I'll give it a try.

The guy I saw on Friday had the amp and cab tilted up. I think that's so it fills the room or maybe so it doesn't kill everyone in the front row?

yeah it distorts at, in my opinion, a giggable volume. Basically there's a point where it stops getting louder & you just use the volume knob to control how much distortion you want, but i guess that level is too loud for you

unless you have a basement i wouldn't crank one of them at home

Hell yeah! The '59 LTD is a killer amp. I've had mine since xmas. I bought a Vox AC30CC 2X12 and after about a week I took it back to GC and got the Bassman LTD. It just has THE sound I'm looking for. Even sweeter is that it comes with groove tube GE 6L6's. I'm a big fan of JTM 45's (the Bassmans grandpappy) and Plexis, and to get near that sound the amp has to be cranked.
