battery box built into the cavity cover?

I remember seeing a photo on this board once. It was displayed at a NAMM, iirc.
Now I need one for my emg upgrade. I don't like unscrewing it every time I change batt. Does anyone have a link?
Thanks,

Re: battery box built into the cavity cover?

( for those that would complain that I'm necro-posting: i disagree. The topic is still pertinent. i'd rather have all the knowledge reside in a single thread instead of spread across multiple threads. makes it easier for the next person to find and get all the info they need).

Are there any other ways to route the control plate that are simpler than using a router tool? - which I don't currently own and would have to buy. And, if I do have to buy a router, what are the specs that I should make sure it has?

Thanks in advance

Well if you're only doing plastic, a dremmel would work. On the other hand if you only need this for one, and it doesn't have to be super precise, a drill and a rasp/file would do it. Trace the outline on the plate, the drill a center hole large enough to fit the file, and then drill 4 smaller holes around the corners of the hole you want, then file/rasp away.

Cool, thanks.

*if* I decided to buy a dremmel - what specs should I make sure it has?

I may need to do this task once again in the future, on a different guitar.

Re: battery box built into the cavity cover?

Dremel is the way
Pvc will melt and wad up on the cutting wheel

When I dissect plastics at work

Mask area in tape

Two 1/4 inch holes in opposing corners
Jig saw down to corner then right to corner
From the other hole
Up to corner and left to corner
Then trim back to starting hole corners

Thin plastics can be scored.with a razor knife
And broken out

Thanks much Ehdwuld, but I am having trouble visualizing what you mean in the quoted section. Can you clarify?

Re: battery box built into the cavity cover?

picture a square

now a dot in the upper left corner, not touching the edges of the corner
just into it

now a dot in the bottom right corner. again just into it

now draw a curved line from the center of the dot in the upper left down to the bottom left corner
curve the line such that it intersects and foiiows the line of the square to the corner and stop

now draw a curved line from the center of the same dot, to the right
again intersecting the line of the square and stopping when you reach the upper right corner

repeat in mirror image for the dot in the bottom right

what you have left is a football shaped slug in the center
that you can then square up by drawing into the corners occupied by the dots

now replace the dots with holes that are sized for your thinnest jigsaw blade
replace draw with saw

and file to square

easy peasy

Re: battery box built into the cavity cover?

oh my
[

the instructions
said draw a dot

then draw a line

instead of draw a dot
and draw a line

drill a hole that looks like a dot
then
instead of drawing a line
saw a line

\

get a practice piece and work it out'
its a small hole

order a couple of covers and try a few '
if you hork one up
you can still practice on the horked piece

Re: battery box built into the cavity cover?

take a pencil and paper and draw the square and dots
visualize the process

Re: battery box built into the cavity cover?

I believe what everyone is trying to say is you do not need a router to make a hole in a control plate. Jigsaws, dremel tools, and files will all work if you drill a hole first.
You can even cut it out with a razor knife: mark the inside of the plate, trace the marks with the utility knife to score the plastic, and then just keep going over those lines until you finally cut through. Just be REAL careful to keep your fingers away from the blade - never cut toward your hand. And, of course, do this with a scrap piece of wood under the plastic. You might want to screw the plate down to the scrap wood, that makes it much easier to hold while cutting.
