They are different for sure. Them uppermids are different, at least they sound different because of the present highs in JB's tone. BBQ on the other hand is really quite dark, doesn't have that much highs. (I think the reason is that the wires are different - BBQ's bobin's are full with what looks like formwar ensulated wires. And I'd say its copper wire gauge is thicker than that of JB, that is thicker than #44. Another thing is that the 2 BBQs that I have owned were both very heavily wax-potted, so that the magnet and everything was almost like in a "wax-bar".)
If JB sounds too uppermid heavy, and thin (which I think is due to the guitar not particularly the pickup), why don't you try swapping its a5 to an a2? Might do it for you!
