Beefier PAF

Re: Beefier PAF

Btw, my experience with the Screamin Demon suggests it's not very PAF-like. I've tried it in each of my guitars and, while very good and musical, lacks the open-ness of a PAF. I find it precise, for lack of a better term. I want a more open sound from a PAF, but maybe that's just me.

.
the dimarzio PAF pro is another that is not really PAF but handles gain and effects very well. the demon is said to be a 59 with a little less bite and more growl?
on paper the duncan CUSTOM is said to be a beefier PAF,
duncans desciption for the SH-5,

"P.A.F. on steroids" tone. Used for classic rock, heavy rock, funk, punk, R&B, metal and drop-tunings.

Beefed up Patent Applied For tone for a hard-driving, kickin' sound with the right balance of power, sustain, and distortion. This pickup cuts through with a distinctive high end and midrange attack.

I have found that the sh-5 produces that fantastic, cutting R&B tone that we all aspire to :naughty: I'm still putting my Full Shred through the hip hop gauntlet to see if it could keep up with the likes of 50 cent and co., so far so good...

But we all know that PAF's weren't wound to 14K or have ceramic magnets, and the Custom in no way duplicates their uncompressed, low output sound.

yep i agree that why i said looks good on paper!:biglaugh: if i wanted a "beefier" paf i would probably just use a 59 set close to the strings with a 300K vol pot

Re: Beefier PAF

What was your first clue...perhaps the name "Screamin' Demon" seemed odd for a low-output vintage PU?
Someone else mentioned the Demon in the thread and I felt I should comment on it not sounding PAF-like, since the subject says a beefier PAF.

Just trying to help out.

Re: Beefier PAF

I always liked the DiMarzio Air Norton in the neck position and the Air Zone in the bridge. Very open and organic, with a nice warmth. More powerful than a PAF but not really high-output pickups.

Air Norton - 12.58k
Air Zone - 17.49k

Re: Beefier PAF

Tone Zone and its "aired" brethren definitely have a nice, smooth overdrive and never get "buzzy" to me. They seem to retain definition no matter how gainy the amp is, which I think is the point. I think some folks don't like the compression of the 17k of wire though.

I think a good ol' 59 with an A8 is just the ticket. PAF with beef... and a little gravy on the side.

Re: Beefier PAF

Wow I didn't expect so many suggestions, thanks guys.
I am moving soon with my girlfriend so my LP project has to slow down a little bit because I need some money to move in our new place but as soon as I can I'll start buying some pups and see what I like.
Thanks

Re: Beefier PAF

Yeh, you've gotten some good suggestions. Here's my $.02...

Any of the Customs is going to sound more compressed than a PAF. Stay away, not really what you want. I've never been impressed with the Customs in any LP type (maple cap). C8 works great in the bridge of an all mahogany SG, though.

'59b with UOA5 or A8 is an excellent choice.

A2P or A2P Slash are good.

Screamin Demon is ACTUALLY a very good choice. It is kinda PAFish but has some extra mids which gives it more growl and beef, but stays very articulate like a true PAF. Don't let the 10k fool you, it behaves like a 7.5 - 8k PAF with a beefier midrange. The extra 2k just seems to add to the mids, not the output.

Re: Beefier PAF

I have a Brobucker in my V and I don't think its all that beefy. Its a great sounding pickup, but IMO the BBQ and 36th I have in other guitars are bigger sounding.

Really?
The Brobucker in my LP sounds pretty thick and meaty.
How do you hear it?

Its in a V and replaced a SuperD, so that's the comparison.

I find it sounds like a hotter PAF that's very clear and articulate, and behaves similar to an Antiquity in its responsiveness, which is the real selling point IMO, but the EQ is not what I would call thick, bassy, anything like that. Its got bite. Its beefier in output, but when I think beefy I'm thinking thick, big bass and low mids, smooth highs and I don't hear all that in the Bro.

Re: Beefier PAF

Howdy,

Some suggestions: Duncan AlNiCo 2 Pro, DiMarzio Air Classic (neck) and 36th anniversary PAF (b) for more mids and still adequate clarity. They sound very good in my ES-335. Good luck!

Re: Beefier PAF

Putting a alnico 8 mag in a 59 bridge will BEEF it up and retain most of the vintage vibe, your bass will be tighter, mids more punchy and your highs will remain intact but be smoother and not as bitey unless you crank your highs on the amp and the presence control. Then you can play with pup height and find a good balance with the neck.
